AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON HUMAN RIGHTS AT MAWSYNRAM

A One Day Awareness programme on Human Rights organized by the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) was held today at Mawsynram Border Area College, Mawsynram. Dr. Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the presence of Shri P. J. P. Hanaman, Member MHRC, Shri A. Mawlong, Secretary, MHRC, Smti E. Warjri, BDO, Mawsynram C&RD Block, Dr. Charis Mine P. Khonglah, Principal Mawsynram Border Area, teachers and students of the area. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Justice Saikia said the objective of organizing the awareness programme on Human Rights was to educate the people especially the students about their fundamental duties and rights as enshrined in our Constitution. Dr. Justice Aftab H. Saikia also stressed on the importance of knowing the Constitution of India. He also enlightened on the various rights and legal remedies which the public can resort to whenever their basic human rights are violated. During the programme, Shri P. J. P. Hanaman, Member MHRC gave an overview of the Human Rights in Meghalaya. Other speakers on the day are Shri B. Diengngan, SDPO, Pynursla and Smti P. Nongrum, APP, Sohra. The programme was followed by an interactive session whereby teachers and students posed questions on various topics relating to Human Rights.

SYNOD COLLEGE POST-GRADUATE BUILDING INAUGURATED

The Post Graduate Building of Synod College, Shillong was inaugurated today by Meghalaya Chief Minister, Shri. Conrad K Sangma in the presence of Home Minister, Shri. James P K Sangma, Commerce and Industries Minister, Shri. Sniawbhalang Dhar, Principal of the college, Dr. D Wanswett, teachers and students among others. During his brief address at the function, the Chief Minister spoke of his close association with the college through the years and lauded the efforts of the management towards uplifting the college to its present status. Speaking on the various aspects of the education sector, the Chief Minister said that the government is giving top priority to education and considering the numerous challenges in the sector, a joint effort of all stakeholders including the government, policy makers, social organizations, teachers and students is required to push it to new heights. The Chief Minister on the occasion expressed hope that Synod College would continue to contribute towards the growth of the state by producing young, enterprising, dynamic and responsible citizens in the state of Meghalaya in future.
