10TH NEBINET ANNUAL COORDINATORS MEET

The 10th North East Bioinformatics Network (NEBINet) Annual Coordinators’ Meeting organized by the Bioinformatics Centre, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong and sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India was held today at St. Edmund’s College Auditorium, Shillong. The Governor of Meghalaya, Shri Ganga Prasad graced the inaugural programme as Chief Guest. The Governor of Meghalaya, Shri Ganga Prasad in his inaugural address said that the panorama of scientific scenario has greatly changed over the years, the thrust areas have undergone a metamorphosis but the conceptual underpinning of the basic sciences still continues. “Of late, the activity of basic research has been intricately intertwined with technology. And we are determined to carry forward this change, for it is through technology that science can actually reach the masses in our country and afar, and the changing times have also inculcated a culture of cross-departmental and interdisciplinary research. Science and technology has always played a pivotal role in taking a nation towards greater heights by ways of innovations and inventions”, he added. The Governor also hoped that discussions, suggestions and sharing of innovative ideas during the two-day 10th North East Bioinformatics Network (NEBINet) Annual Coordinators’ Meet will open up new avenues to make substantial advancement in Biological Sciences which will provide a platform for proper and effective delivery mechanism for the common man. During the inaugural function, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Dr. T. Madhan Mohan gave an overview of the NEBINet and Bioinformatics Program and President, Epygen Biotech FZ LLC, Dubai, UAE, Dr. Debayan Ghosh delivered a keynote address. Bro Simon Coelho, Secretary, Governing Body, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong and Dr. Sylvanus Lamare, Principal, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong also spoke during the function.

ONE-DAY DISTRICT LEVEL AWARENESS PROGRAMME

The Meghalaya State Food Commission (MSFC) in collaboration with Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, Meghalaya organized a one-day District Level Awareness Programme on November 16th, 2017 at Diocesan Pastoral Hall, New Nongstoin. Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Prof. R.C. Laloo, informed that the purpose of holding the programme is to create awareness about the Rights of the people especially the poor relating to the Acts providing the general masses with healthy and proper nutritious food. He also said that the Food Commission was constituted with an objective to safeguard human rights, and added that the door of the Commission is open for public complaints or dial 1967 seeking enquiry or complaints. He said that the Commission is an Apex body to take any ruling and decisions against defaulters. During the programme, Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, Education Department and Social Welfare Department gave power-point presentations on NFSA, 2013, Mid Day Meal and ICDS Nutrition Progress respectively. Shri B. K. Dev Verma (Retd) IAS, Chairman, State Food Commission, Smti L. Kharkongor (Retd) IAS, Member, State Food Commission and Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, Shri Arunkumar Kembhavi also spoke on the occasion.

U KIANG NONGBAH AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS

Applications are invited by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs from the citizens of Meghalaya for the Meghalaya Day “U Kiang Nongbah award for excellence in Sports” to be awarded on the occasion of Meghalaya Day celebration i.e. on 21st January, 2018. SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME ON HUMAN RIGHTS HELD AT TURA

A One-Day Sensitization and Awareness programme on Human Rights organized by the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) was held on 16th November, 2017 at DRDA Conference Hall, West Garo Hills District, Tura. P J P Hanaman, former DGP and Member, MHRC, A Mawlong, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, MHRC, Pravin Bakshi, Deputy Commissioner, WGH, Tura, Dr. M G Raghavendra Kumar, Superintendent of Police, S G Momin, former IGP & President Nokma Council, Tura, heads of departments, police department, senior citizens, president, & secretary, Mothers Union, Tura, students and stakeholders were present at the sensitization programme. In his address as Chief Guest, Dr. Justice A H Saikia, Hon’ble Chairperson, MHRC, Shillong stated that Article 51 of the Constitution provides every citizen to abide by its laws and to respect and protect the integrity as well as to promote harmony irrespective of caste creed, religion, language, etc. While dwelling on various aspects of human rights, Dr. Saikia urged everyone to help people in need since helping itself is also awareness, he added. During his presentation, P J P Hanaman informed the gathering about the constitution of MHRC which was constituted under Section 21 of the protection of Human Rights Act 1993 and stated that Meghalaya is the third State in North East after Assam and Tripura to have Human Rights Commission constituted in order to safeguard the rights of every individual. He further stressed on the importance of basic rights of the citizens namely, Civil, Political, Economic, Social and Cultural rights of the people of the state and also presented the salient features and functions of MHRC. Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Dr. M G R Kumar briefly presented the Human Rights and Policing with respect to the West Garo Hills district and highlighted the necessary guidelines to be followed while registering an FIR and other formalities in connection with the case. Additional Deputy Commissioner, WGH, Tura A V D Shira enlightened the gathering about the Human Rights case study analysis of the gruesome and brutal murder of five people at Mrigri village under the then Rongram Police outpost which after prolong investigation the case had finally been chargesheeted.
