VISIT OF THE HON'BLE GOVERNOR OF MEGHALAYA TO SOHRA

Shri Satya Pal Malik, Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya today visited Sohra. On arrival at the Circuit House, he took the Guard of Honour in the presence of the officials of Sohra Civil Sub-Division. During the visit, he had a brief interaction with the officials of Sohra Civil Sub-Division. Shri. A. S. Mukhim, MCS, Sub-Divisional Officer (C), Sohra Civil Sub-Division gave a short briefing and apprised the Governor on the formation of the Sohra Civil Sub-Division, the number of Blocks, its population and literacy rate, which stand at 74 percent. He also apprised the Governor on the status of primary education, the centrally sponsored schemes and the different livelihoods activities carried out by the people in the area and the different varieties of flora and fauna found under the Sohra Civil Sub-Division. Later in the day, the Governor visited Ramakrishna Mission, Sohra and had an interaction with the students.

NATIONAL MILK DAY 2020 CELEBRATED IN THE CITY

The National Milk Day 2020 was celebrated today at a function organised by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and Dairy Development, Meghalaya at Yojana Bhavan, Main Secretariat, Shillong. The function was attended by Deputy Chief Minister i/c Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Shri Prestone Tynsong, Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Shri G.H.P. Raju, Chairman of Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission, Shri K.N. Kumar and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department Dr. Manjunatha C.

Addressing the gathering Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Prestone Tynsong said that the National Milk Day is an appropriate celebration to honour the contributions of Dr. Verghese Kurien the ‘Father of the White Revolution’ in transforming the dairy sector and rural livelihood across the country. He also expressed hope that the various initiatives and programmes of the Government to ramp up milk production in the State will transform the dairy sector further adding that increased production and consumption of milk will help secure the nutritional security of children. ‘Milk is a very important source of vitamins and protein and it could be one of the answers to combat malnutrition and improve overall health of our children. In trying to fulfil the production requirement of our State in the dairy sector State we are also creating a very strong institutional setup in terms of cooperative societies which ultimately will give economic benefit to the people’, he said while lauding the efforts of the various dairy cooperatives in the State.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the Government has envisioned a roadmap to empower dairy farmers and uplift rural livelihood through various mission mode projects under the dairy sector in the State. He further urged upon the cooperative societies to come forward and avail the loans under the milk mission provided by Government without any interest. During the programme, awards were also distributed to outstanding dairy farmers and winners of various competitions. A booklet on “The Dairy Movement in the State of Meghalaya” was also released by the Deputy Chief Minister and at the same time he also felicitated a 5-time International Kick Boxing Gold Medalist, Hameshaniah Suiam.

CM LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR NEW BUILDING OF WILLIAMNAGAR GOVERNMENT COLLEGE

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Shri Conrad K Sangma today laid the foundation stone for the new building of Williamnagar Government College at Williamnagar in the presence of local MLA, Shri Marcuise N Marak, Director of Higher and Technical Education, Shri Ambrose Ch Marak, former Chairman of GHADC, Shri Denang T Sangma, East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Shri Swapnil Tembe and the other dignitaries.

Addressing the programme, the Chief Minister informed that the target for completion of the building is the year 2022 and the construction will start from January next year. He also highlighted the steps being taken by the government for improving the education sector in the state and lauded the local MLA, Shri Marcuise N Marak for his initiatives towards the present status of the college. Informing the people about the steps of the government for improving road connectivity in the state, the Chief Minister said that funds have been sanctioned for improving the roads which have been neglected for decades. He also informed that the construction of the Tribal Research Centre will be completed by the year 2022.

Meanwhile, local MLA, Shri Marcuise N Marak highlighted on the steps taken by the government for improving the Government College in Williamnagar and lauded the Chief Minister for sanctioning funds for the new building of the college which was established in the year 2000 and taken over by the government in the year 2009. Others who spoke on the occasion include the Director of Higher and Technical Education, Shri Ambrose Ch Marak and Principal, Williamnagar Government College, Shri Rajiv K Marak who proposed the vote of thanks.

PHOTO EXHIBITION MARKS CONSTITUTION DAY CELEBRATION

Commemorating the 71st year of the adoption of the Constitution of India, Constitution Day or 'Samvidhan Divas' was today celebrated through a one day photo exhibition held at the Conference Hall of the High Court of Meghalaya. The exhibition which depicts the enactment of the Constitution of India was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Justice Biswanath Somadder in the presence of Justice Wanlura Diengdoh, Judge Meghalaya High Court among others.

The programme was organised by the High Court of Meghalaya in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority. Speaking on the occasion, Justice Biswanath Somadder termed the Constitution of India as the “soul” of the Nation expressed eloquently through the words written in the Preamble. Stressing on the first expression of the Preamble “Justice”, he said that in today’s scenario the concept of social, economic and political justice is of paramount importance and the three cannot exist without Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship. Equality in status and opportunity is the bedrock principles of an egalitarian society and the promotion of Fraternity is possible when the dignity of the individual is assured and does not compromise with the unity and integrity of the Nation, he added. As part of the observation, the Chief Justice also led in the reading of the Preamble.

It may be mentioned that the Constitution of India is the longest written constitution of any sovereign country in the world and the aim of celebrating Constitution Day annually on November 26 is to raise awareness of fundamental duties as enshrined in the Constitution and also promote Constitutional values among citizens.
