WORKSHOP ON MAINSTREAMING DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

Shillong, 29th November, 2011: The District Disaster Management Authority, Jaintia Hills organised a one day District Level Workshop on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Programme into Development for all District heads on November 25, 2011 at Science Hall, Jowai Circuit House.

The main objective of this workshop is to make ourselves aware and be better prepared to deal with disasters that may occur and ensuring that when they occur, they can be dealt with efficiently and effectively in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.

The Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills District, Mr. T. Dkhar while inaugurating the workshop called for active participation of the District Heads and also stressed on the need to organise more such workshops o give awareness and be prepared for better response in times of emergencies.

S.C Laloo, EAC Incharge of Disaster Management informed that a District Emergency Operation centre has been set up at Mynthong, Jowai. Constructed under the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Project the centre will be useful in times of emergencies. He called for cooperation and coordination from all departments.

HB. Marak, OSD, Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, S. Bhattacharya, SPO UNDP, Dr. B.P Sahu Department of Adult and continuing Education, S. Ryngad Deputy CD&HGs were the Resource persons at the workshop.

INNAUGURATION OF THE COMMON FACILITY CENTRE AT DIWON

Shillong, 29th November, 2011: Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya Dr DD.Lapang, inaugurated the Common Facilities Centre for Eri Silk at Diwon village, Ri Bhoi District on November 28, 2011 in the presence of Dr. C.Lyngdoh, local MDC, Mr. C.B Syiem Ex-CEM, Dr. S.B Baruah, Head IIE Guwahati, Ms. B. Nongrum, District Sericulture Officer, Mr. I.A Diengdoh, ZO Weaving East Khasi Hills, Shillong beside others.

The Common Facility Centre was constructed under BRGF Scheme 2010-2011at an amount of Rs. 15 Lakhs.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lapang lauded the initiatives taken by the office of Sericulture and Weaving to uplift the socio-economic development of indigenous people of Ri Bhoi through marketing of indigenous products by weavers of the district. He also said that while observing the products marketing within and outside of the state, he said that weavers of Ri Bhoi have got the potential to compete with other weavers of the State and hoped that the Common Facility Centre would cater to the needs of the local weavers and the area as a whole particularly the educated unemployed youth.

Dr Lapang, stated to the public that 100 machines will be sanctioned through MLA Schemes for those falling under BPL family.
