Press Release No. 830/06 NEHU NATIONAL SEMINAR ON TRANSLATION ORGANISED AT TURA The Department of English, NEHU, Tura Campus organized a two day National Seminar on “Profiling Social Change through Literature and Translation at the Campus conference hall at Tura on November 1 and 2, 2006. According to Dr Sujata Gurudev, Programme Director and Head Department of English, this is the first seminar of its kind organized by the department to focus on the role of translation in the multi cultural context of the Northeastern region. It is also aimed at providing a platform for the writers’ translators and literatures to address various issues and problems of translation. Speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural session, former Pro Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Tura campus Prof. Milton S Sangma said although translation is a hazardous task, it is necessary work in this stage of globalization. Eminent translator, critic and social commentator from Cotton College, Guwahati, Prof Pradip Acharya, in his keynote address, said any form of writing is a translation and deliberated extensively on the politics of translation. Participating as a special guest on the occasion, local MLA of Tura, Mr Billykid A Sangma congratulated the department for organizing this kind of seminar which, he hoped, would be of great benefit, particularly to the student. Chairman of the meeting, Pro VC, NEHU Tura campus, Prof S S Khare felt that the rich folklore and mythologies of the Northeast region should be translated widely in English and other languages, so that more people of the country would be able to read and understand them. During the two-day sessions, noted academicians and scholars like Prof. Mani Metei of Manipur University, Prof. S N Goswami of Gauhati University, Linguist and translation scholar of Assam, Prof. G S Pandey, Prof Tensula Ao and Prof. Esther Syiem of NEHU, Shillong and North east Studies (NES) scholar Dr Paragmoni Sarma of Assam University, Silchar were among others who participated as resource persons. National Award winning film makers Mr Gautam Bora and Mr Chandra Narayan Burua also screened their widely acclaimed films during the occasion. |
