TRANSFORMING STREETS, TACTICAL URBANISM TRIALS SET TO ENHANCE URBAN MOBILITY IN SHILLONG

Under Reimagining Streets initiative, the Government of Meghalaya is implementing Tactical Urbanism Trial Plan from IGP to DC office junction. The program kick-started with 25 students painting the streets in front of Aayakar Bhavan on November 5th, 2024.The officials from the DC office, Urban Affairs Department and PWD steered the initiative for successful engagement.

Tactical urbanism trial plan is a temporary, low-cost, and quick intervention that tests urban design, transportation planning, and infrastructure changes. Through this initiative the Government with support from community aims to create more vibrant streets and walkways that enhances mobility while ensuring that our streets are safe and enjoyable for everyone.

This approach involves implementing visual measures such as painting, installation of traffic cones, planter boxes, road marking and signages. This month-long trial aims to gather user feedback on these changes, making necessary revisions before proceeding with the construction of permanent infrastructure.

This initiative is part of the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy formulated by the Government of Meghalaya in January 2024, which outlines Vision 2030 that dedicates 30 percent of road space to Non-Motorized Transport, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists to foster a more inclusive and safer city.
