LEGAL LITERACY CAMPAIGN HELD AT UMSNING

Shillong, November 15, 2010: The office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Service Authority (MSLSA), Shillong organized a Legal Literacy Campaign on November 12, 2010 at Community Hall, Umsning.

In the campaign, resource persons which included Mr. L Wahlang, Advocate, Mr. P Khonglah, BDO Umsning Block, Mrs. R Khymdeit, Advocate, Mr. B M Lyngdoh, Public Prosecutor and Mr. N A Lyngdoh, Additional Public Prosecutor delivered lectures on different topics pertaining to law like Right to Information (RTI) Act, National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (NREGS), Crime against Women & Trafficking Minor Girls, Fundamental Rights and FIR.

Mr. W H D Syngkon, Advocate, in his speech as the Chief Guest stressed upon the importance of education for children and urged upon them to develop the habit of obedience, discipline, sincerity and dedication so that they succeed in life.

Mr. W Diengdoh, Member Secretary MSLSA and Registrar of Gauhati High Court, highlighted the purpose of the awareness campaign which is to motivate the people to be aware of their rights so that they can cope with every situation in their lives.

GOVERNMENT OF MEGHALAYA SIGNED MOU WITH SBI

Shillong, November 15, 2010: With a view to bring greater transparency and timely payment of wages to MGNREGA workers through the Banking Correspondence Model, the Government of Meghalaya, Community & Rural Development Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State Bank of India on November 12, 2010. The MoU was signed by the Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, C & RD, Mr. F Kharlyngdoh on behalf of the State Government and Mr. Tilak Das, Deputy General Manager, State Bank of India, Rural Business, North Eastern Circle, Local Head Office, GS Road, Dispur, Guwahati on behalf of the State Bank of India.

It may be mentioned that through the Banking Correspondence Model, the wages are directly deposited in the personal accounts of MGNREGA workers by Government. It may also be mentioned that Meghalaya is the first State in North East India to take this initiative for improvement of this mode of wage payment to the workers.

Initially, the system will kick start in all Village Employment Councils/Area Employment Councils in those Blocks of East Khasi Hills District and West Garo Hills District and the same will be extended to VECs/AECs in other Districts in phased manner. This will be a biggest challenge for the bank initially to handle such colossal magnitude of projects under MGNREGA.

Shillong, November 15, 2010: Applications are invited for fresh appointment of Government Nominees/Rice Wholeseller in PDS under Jowai Sadar Sub-Division Jaintia Hills District for the year 2011, for the wholesale centre of Jowai, Ummulong, Nartiang and Shangpung. This was informed by the Deputy Commissioner (Supply) Jaintia Hills District.

Prescribed applications are available in the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply), Jaintia Hills District, Jowai. Application duly filled in and accompanied with all the necessary documents should be submitted to the office of the DC (Supply), Jowai on or before 25.11.2010.
