28TH INDIA INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR CONCLUDED

The 28th India International Trade Fair 2008, organised by India Trade Promotion Organization at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, concluded on November 27, 2008.

Meghalaya was represented by the Information and Public Relations Department as the nodal department, Department of Sericulture and Weaving, Forest, Horticulture, Social Welfare, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Soil and Water Conservation, Tourism, PWD (Building), MKVIB and MHHDC besides entrepreneurs and artisans from different parts of the State. The items displayed during the two week Fair included handicrafts, processed food, cane and bamboo products, aromatic spices and handwoven eri silk products.

It may be mentioned that this annual extravaganza based on the theme “Infrastructure and Women’s Empowerment” was inaugurated on November 14, 2008. The Fair saw the active participation from 7500 firms from India and overseas. Over 40 countries, such as Thailand, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China etc also took part.

AIDS DAY TO BE OBSERVED

The Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), Shillong, in collaboration with NGOs Partners will be observing World AIDS Day on the universal theme “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise” on 1st December, 2008 with different activities.

As part of the Mass Media Campaign, MACS through the Superhits 93.5 SFM will organized a Road Show on a day prior to World AIDS Day on November 29, 2008 to create awareness on the issues relating to HIV/AIDS. An Advocacy meeting with Youth Clubs, Sports and Cultural Clubs, Scouts and Guides, Students’ Union etc will be held at the Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah, Shillong on December 1, 20-08 from 11:00 AM onwards where Dr. A Pariong, Meghalaya Minister of Health and Family Welfare will be the Chief Guest in the meeting.

A Candle Light Procession will also be taken out by people from different localities of Shillong wherein the procession will be flagged off by Mr. R G Lyngdoh from Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah at 4:00 PM. This will be followed by a Short Musical Evening at the Old Assembly Site, Khyndai Lad where local artists including Timmy Hujon, Catherine Pyngrope, Valerie Khyriem, Desmond and Sara Syiemlieh, B Lanong will perform. The Chief Guest on this occasion will be the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Mr. B M Lanong.

TYISAM FESTIVAL AT BAGHMARA

The District Administration in collaboration with the State Tourism Department is organising a three day “Tyisam Festival 2008” at Baghmara Simsang Beach, South Garo Hills District from 4th to 6th December, 2008. The events during the Festival will include Rowing, Diving, Swimming, Fishing and Singing competition, Kite Flying, Beach Volleyball, Beach Football, Fancy Dress competition, Flower Show, Story telling competition, Marathon Race besides indigenous games and food festival.

A Rock Concert and DJ Nite, an Exhibition by the District Industries Centre, Baghmara are also some of the attractions during the Fest. Interested participants can submit their entries by December 1, 2008 to the District Sports Officer, District Tourist Officer, DFO, Balpakram National Park and District Transport Officer.

COACHING FOR CIVIL SERVICES (PRELIMINARY) EXAMINATION 2009

Applications for admission into the All India Services Pre-Examination Training Centre are invited from candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, OBCs. Candidates whose parents are safaiwallas who are eligible to appear at the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary (Qualifying) Examination 2009 shall also be eligible for admission into the Centre. The Coaching will be imparted in Arts, Science and Commerce subjects through English Medium. Candidates who have at least passed the Degree Examination with a minimum of 50 p.c. average marks in aggregate and who have not undergone training or have undergone training only once in any of the Pre-Examination Training Centres in the Country and who intend to apply for the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2009 will be eligible for consideration for enrolment into the Centre.

The last date of for receipt of application in prescribed form is within 15.12.2008 for the Coaching in this Centre. Printed application form may be obtained from the office of the Director (Admn), All India Services Pre-Examination Training Centre, Additional Secretariat Building (MATI Premises), Shillong on a written request accompanied with a self-addressed envelope (23cm x 10cm) bearing Rs. 10/- postage stamp.

DISTRICT WATER SANITATION MEETING HELD

To review the progress and implementation of the Total Sanitation Programme in Jaintia Hills District, the District Water Sanitation Mission Committee was held at the office chamber of the Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills District on November 27, 2008 in which Mr. L Rymbui, MLA and other officials from allied departments attended. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. S Goyal.

Mr. Goyal, in his speech, lamented over the slow progress and non implementation of the Total Sanitation Scheme by some schools and individuals. Therefore, he directed the concerned officials to issue show cause notice to all the schools through the Deputy Inspector of Schools and stern action be taken against schools and individuals who fail to complete the scheme allotted to them in time.

Mr. C R Challam, Member Secretary of the District Water Sanitation Mission, gave a detailed report on the scheme and its implementation.

FINAL PUBLICATION OF THE LIST OF POLLING STATIONS

The District Election Officer who is also the Returning Officer of Jaintia Hills District, Jowai has informed that as per the Election Commission approval, the approved list of the polling stations for the Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies against 1-Nartiang (ST), 2-Jowai (ST), 3-Raliang (ST), 4-Mookaiaw (ST), 5-Sutnga-Saipung (ST), 6-Khliehriat (ST) and 7-Amlarem Assembly Constituencies have been approved within Jaintia Hills District.

The list of the polling stations are available for inspection at the office of the District Election Officer, Jowai, the offices of the Sub-Divisional Officers (Civil) Khliehriat and Amlarem and in the offices of the Block Development Officers.

PUBLICATION OF THE DRAFT ELECTORAL ROLLS

The Deputy Commissioner who is also the Returning Officer of the District Council Elections, Jaintia Hills District, Jowai has notified that the Draft Electoral Rolls of the District Council Constituencies has been prepared and is available for inspection in the office of the Deputy Commissioner and in the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) Khliehriat and Block Development Officer Saipung on all working days during office hours.

The qualifying date for preparation of electoral roll is 18 years and above as on 1.1.2009. Any inclusion of name or any objection to the inclusion of name or objection in any entry or any objection against him/her being struck off the list should be lodged with the office of the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Jaintia Hills District and in the offices of the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) Khliehriat and Block Development Officer, Saipung on all working days with effect from 21.11.2008 to 2.12.2008.

Claims and objections filed by such persons will be summarily disposed off on or before 23.12.2008 at the identified locations.

The final Electoral Rolls of the District Council Constituencies will be published in the above mentioned offices on 2.1.2009.
