SEMINAR ON MENTAL HEALTH

The Meghalaya State Judicial Academy today organized a Seminar on ‘Mental Health’ at the Conference Hall of the High Court of Meghalaya, Shillong. Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir graced the inaugural session as the Chief Guest. The inaugural session was also attended by Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya, Hon’ble Mr. Justice H. S. Thangkhiew. Addressing the inaugural session, the Chief Justice said that mental health is of utmost importance for the overall wellbeing of physical health. Besides providing better healthcare and a conducive environment, there is a need to have a healthy psychological approach to bring back a person with mental disorder to the mainstream, he added. The inaugural programme was followed by a series of sessions wherein Resource Persons, Dr. Sandi Syiem, MD, (Psych) Director, San-Ker Hospital, Shillong, Dr. Arvind Nongpyiur, MD, DPM, Assistant Professor & HOD I/c NEIGRIHMS, Shillong and Shri Shishir Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Law Department, NEHU, Shillong deliberated on the topics: “Mental health issues from the perspectives of clinical psychiatry”, “Difference between legal insanity (Forensic Psychiatry) and medical insanity (Clinical Psychiatry)” and “Substantive Law Provisions” respectively.

STATE LEVEL WORLD AIDS DAY OBSERVED

The State Level World Aids Day was observed here today at Don Bosco Technical School Hall, Shillong which was attended by Chief Secretary, Y Tsering as the Chief Guest and P W Ingty, Additional Chief Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department and President, Meghalaya AIDS Control Society, Shillong as the Guest of Honour. Speaking to a large gathering of nursing students from various nursing schools of the city, Chief Guest, Y Tsering said that the world is addressing the menace of AIDS and working together to eliminate the disease by 2030. He added that the theme of the observation this year ‘Live Life Positively-Know Your Status’ are small words but carry a deep meaning. He said that it was important for everyone to know one’s own HIV status so that AIDS is not spread. He also informed that earlier, people did not come forward to know their status due to the stigma attached with AIDS but the mindset is changing through social awareness. He urged all specially the youth to safeguard and protect themselves from AIDS.

Guest of Honour, Additional Chief Secretary, P W Ingty during his address informed that though the State through Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS) has organized a number of activities to bring about awareness about AIDS everyone has become complacent adding that AIDS is increasing in a few districts in the State and there is a need to focus on those districts. He also stated that AIDS can be completely eliminated if each one makes it a personal responsibility to contain the disease. Earlier, the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour distributed the awards and prizes to the winners of various competitions that were held as a part of the observation.

ONE DAY BLOCK LEVEL LIVESTOCK MELA HELD

A one day Block Level Livestock Mela organized by the Office of the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer, East Khasi Hills for livestock farmers of Sohiong C&RD Block was held today at Sohiong. The Mela was organised under the National Livestock Mission 2017-18 on the theme “Economic Empowerment through Livestock Mission.” Minister for PHE and local MLA, Shri Samlin Malngiang graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the presence of Dr. C. Shilla, Director, AH & Veterinary, Dr. (Mrs) A. Laloo, District AH & Veterinary Officer, Dr. (Mrs) N. Marwein, AH & Veterinary Officer, Sohiong Dispensary among others. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Malngiang said livestock rearing in rural area is one of the sources of income which contributes significantly to rural livelihood and also provides employment opportunities. Stating that backyard livestock method is comparatively low in production, Shri Malngiang urged the farmers to adopt the modern method of farming as introduced by the Veterinary Department which can easily boost up production with improved breed of livestock. He also emphasized on the ready availability of market for livestock products as the State depends largely on other States for supply of raw meat and poultry products, Shri Malngiang urged the farmers to go for large scale farming so as to earn higher profit margins.

Dr. (Mrs) A. Laloo, District A.H. & Veterinary Officer, in her keynote address said that the Livestock Mission is designed to cover all the activities required to ensure quantitative and qualitative improvement in livestock production systems, capacity building of all stakeholders and sustainable development of livestock sector. As a token of appreciation, awards were handed over to the outstanding farmers who showed tremendous contribution in the piggery, goatery, dairy and poultry sector by the Chief Guest. The day long programme includes technical session followed by an interactive session. Stalls were also put up by the various Block Offices and local entrepreneurs for display and sale of dairy products at the Mela. It may be mentioned that similar programmes was also held at Pynursla C&RD Block on 29th November, 2018 wherein Shri J. Tynsong, local MDC attended the programme as the Chief Guest while Smti T. Thangkhiew local MDC attended the Mela at Mylliem C&RD Block on 30th November, 2018.
