GOVERNOR INAUGURATES GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF NONGKREM SECONDARY SCHOOL

Shillong, December 14, 2010: “We should not confine ourselves within the knowledge of text books, but we should convert the text books into the finest materials to make the students good human beings,” said the Governor of Meghalaya, Mr. R S Mooshahary while inaugurating the year long Golden Jubilee celebration of Nongkrem Secondary School today, December 14, 2010.

Also present at the grand function held at Mawryntong Playground, Nongkrem were the Meghalaya Minister of Education, etc., Mrs. Ampareen Lyngdoh as the Guest of Honour, MDC of Nongkrem, Mr. L Malngiang, headmen of different localities of Nongkrem, elders, parents, teachers and students of different schools within the vicinity of Nongkrem.

The Governor, in his speech, lauded the school management on achieving the significant milepost and said that the school is a stage for children to find out what they want for and from the world. He said that the temple of knowledge should not only confine to academic field but rather we should stress on moulding the students and making them good human beings. We need to prepare our students to take up more responsibilities of carrying forward our State and country as a whole, he added. He urged upon the teachers to be kind and encouraging, friendly and inspirational and even ready to help the students in everyway. He said that teachers should consider teaching not as a profession but a mission, the aim of which is not only to impart education but also to groom and shape up the minds of the students so that they are able to stand on their own feet. He also called upon parents to train their children at home to cultivate positivism so that they can achieve their desired goals.

In her speech as the Guest of Honour, the Education Minister, Mrs. Ampareen Lyngdoh said that a school founded by the community lasts forever and the Nongkrem Secondary School, despite heavy odds, still stands strong and grows from strength to strength and this is due to the community participation which has enable the school management to carry forward the torch of knowledge in the area. While commending on the services rendered by the school, she also assured that the government will look into the needs of the school and provide them with good lab facility, a library and assured the management that the Department will consider providing assistance for maintenance and renovation of the school building.

Expressing happiness to know that Nongkrem has achieved 80percent -85percent literacy rate, she expressed hope that the school management will find ways and means to make education conducive for children so that the area can achieve cent per cent literacy rate. She called upon the school management to make the institution friendly so as to meet the various criteria for entitlement of State and Central schemes.

It may be mentioned that during the year 1958, the elders of the Raid Nongkrem Pyllun discussed the need to set up a high school in Nongkrem area and decided to collect funds from the public and other sources as well. Then in the year 1961, the Nongkrem Secondary School was established with a handful of students. The 1st batch of students appeared in the Matriculation Examination in the year 1967. Fifty years on, the school now boasts of over 350 students with around 60 faculty members.

On the day, a memorandum was also presented to the Governor and the Education Minister. Other highlights of the day included a march-past and drill by the students of the school, songs and cultural programme presented by different schools of the area. Others who spoke on the occasion were local MDC, Mr. L Malngiang and Mr. E B Kharngi, Chairman Nongkrem Dorbar Pyllun who read out a brief history of the school.

RAISING DAY OF CIVIL DEFENCE AND HOME GUARDS OBSERVES

Shillong, December 14, 2010: The Raising Day of the Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards was observed today at the Central Training Institute of the Civil Defence and Home Guards, Mawdiangdiang, Shillong. Mr. A. D. Marak, Minister for Home Civil Defence and Home Guards graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Marak appreciated the work done by the civil defence during the calamities and said that in view of changing nature of disasters and the increased frequency of happening of various man made and natural disasters, there is a need to fully equip the civil defence and impart necessary training and skills to the common man to face these disasters effectively.

Mr. W.R. Marbaniang, Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards in his speech informed that the department in the last six years has trained 2386 home guards personnel, 9825 civil defence volunteers in the last five years, and 530 home guards personnel and 3185 civil defence volunteers were imparted training during the year 2010-2011.

Mr. Marbaniang also said that 36059 volunteers and 400 school and college teachers were trained in Disaster Management with the assistance of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department and the help of the District Administration.

During the day, Mr. A. Saio, Additional Director of Civil Defence and Home Guards announce the name of the 11 awardees of the Director’s General, National Disaster Response Force and Civil Defence, New Delhi, Disc and Commendation Certificate on the occasion of the Home Guards & Civil Defence Annual Day, 2010.

ENERGY CONSERVATION DAY OBSERVES

Shillong, December 14, 2010: “Saving Energy is required for the domestic, industrial, commercial and other sector to meet the ever increasing demand for power supply” said Mr. A.Som, Commissioner and Secretary Power department in his inaugural address. The programme on Energy Conservation Day, 2010 was organized by the Inspectorate of Electricity, Meghalaya on December 14, 2010 at the Conference Hall of St. Anthony’s College, Shillong.

Mr. Som emphasized on the needs of spreading awareness programme on energy conservation concept through electronic and print media to reach the general public at large. He also informed that the government after recognized and realized the vast potential of energy saving has promulgated Energy Conservation Act, 2001 on March 2002 and designated the Inspectorate of Electricity as the State designated agency for implementation of Energy Conservation Activities.

The programme also includes power points presentation on Introduction of the activities undertaken by the Meghalaya State Designated Agency on Energy Conservation presented by Mr. B.D.Nengnong Senior Electrical Inspector, ENCON and Climate Change presented by Mr.P. Chattoraj, Additional Director Petroleum Conservation Research Association, Kolkata, Electrical Energy Conservation by Mr.K.L.Bhutia, Dy. Director Petroleum Conservation Research Association, Guwahati and Renewal Energy Certificate Conservation of Conventional Energy by Mr. Rajib Sutradhar, Chief Manager POSOCO (PGCIL).
