Press Release No. 710/16 AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO HELD With a view to sensitize and inspire people for the better child sex ratio and effective approach to girlchild in the District, the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District organized a one-day awareness programme on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme today at Science Hall, Nongpoh which was attended by the Anganwadi Workers and ASHAs. Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Shri D. Hynniewta, ADC, Ri Bhoi District informed that Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a central scheme launched by the Prime Minister of India on 22nd January, 2015 at Panipat, Haryana with an aim to make girls independent both socially and financially through education. While comparing the sex ratio in the main land of the country to that of the State, he said that Meghalaya being a matrilineal society, the sex ratio is comparatively higher. He also said that women are not lacking behind in any discipline or aspect of life, all they need is promotion andencouragement to be able to use their talent, he added. Hynniewta also recalled some of the renowned women who has bring honor and dignity to the District and the State as the whole, like Smti A. Tynsong of Pahamrioh village who had received the national bravery award, Smti D. Kharbhih, a girl cadet instructor who scaled Mt. Everest and Smti P. Makri of Thadnongiaw, who has been voted as one of the 100 women achievers of India in the category of Commerce Industry andEntrepreneurship and was recently felicitated by the district administration under the scheme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.He also stressed on the need to encourage a girl child and allow them to grow up normally like any other child in the family and exhorted the Anganwadi workers being at the grassroot level to be always in touch with their fellow women in their village and educate them so as to curb the dropout rates among the girl students in rural areas.
