Press Release No. 589/10 STATUE OF LATE BARRISTER PAKEM UNFURLED AT JOWAI Shillong the 18th December,2010: Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri B M Lanong today the 18th December, 2010 unfurled the Bust of (L) Barrister Pakem at District Library, Jowai during the commemoration and installation ceremony of the statue of (L) B Pakem organised by the District Administration as a mark of recognition to his contribution for the welfare of the region. It may be mentioned that Prof Barrister Pakem was a great scholar, an upright leader and a man of integrity. He was the Gold Medalist in M.A. Examination of Guwahati University in 1963 and a Law Graduate as well. He got his Ph.D. in 1972 from Dibrugarh University. He was the first tribal of North East to become the Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (1992-1998). Prof Pakem’s hard works and strong determination will inspire many for generation to come. The function was chaired by Shri T.Dkhar,IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills District in which a large number of scholars, citizens of Jaintia Hills and Government officials attended the function. Others who spoke on the occasion, includes Prof. A.N.Rai, Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Shri Bendrewel Dkhar, Shri Mespal Pakem, Dr. P.M.Passah, and the youngest daughter of (L) B.Pakem. The other highlights of the day includes, songs by Shri Lynkit Lyngdoh, Seng Manbei, Jowai and others.(mipr) |
