Press Release No. 506/14 CM INAUGURATES NONGSTOIN COLLEGE GIRLS HOSTEL, MUSIC INSTITUTE Shillong, Dec 6, 2014: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma today inaugurated the Girls’ Hostel of Nongstoin College and also the Music Institute, here in a befitting function as the chief guest in the presence of the local MLA Hopingstone Lyngdoh who was the guest of honour. The Girls’ Hostel was funded by UGC, while the Music Institute has been funded by State Art and Culture for traditional music and dances. The Chief Minister also released a book titled “Impact of Globalization on Traditional Political Institutions North East India” written by R.K. Satapathy and the College magazine on the occasion. In his hurried speech on the occasion, Dr. Sangma said that it is the desire of the government that every district in the state must have the kind of institution for primary, elementary, secondary, higher secondary and higher education and in this regard, the government would work with NEHU, as has been done for Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills, for Nongstoin to have NEHU Campus for almost all the departments which have degree courses. He said that his government have re-strategized its investment in respect of education and have maintained that every district must have self-sufficiency in education and despite constraints, “we have worked hard to locate resources for the sector”. Speaking of the recent agreement signed with the ADB for starting special investments in the State, Dr. Sangma said human capital development is one of them adding that his government would upscale this investment and extend it to higher education including degree and post graduation. As far as Nongstoin College is concerned, the Chief Minister lauded the approach taken by the leaders of the area in respect of management of the college and urged upon the Deputy Commissioner, F. Kharlyngdoh, who is also the Chairman of the Governing Body to prepare a new proposal for the development of the college saying that the government would consider their proposal this financial year itself. He also urged upon the department of Education to expeditiously implement the government’s initiative to create hostels in every district for students coming from rural areas as land has been made available, he added. The Chief Minister also informed that it is the commitment of the government to have Science and Commerce courses in all district capitals and since the people of Nongstoin wants the institution to be within the management and control of the people themselves, the first sanction for Science stream under Deficit system should go to Nongstoin College, he announced. Admiring the beauty of the place, the Chief Minister called upon the Deputy Commissioner to call a meeting of all concerned in the area to plan up something for further beautification of Nongstoin saying that Nongstoin-Nongkhnum is one of the target areas of the government for investment in developing the area as a tourist destination. Besides the Chief Minister and Hopingstone Lyngdoh, others who also spoke on the occasion were the MLA of Mawthengkut, Witting Mawsor, Commissioner and Secretary, Education, E.P. Kharbhih, Registrar, NEHU, L. Cajee, Deputy Commissioner, F. Kharlyngdoh and Principal of the College, B. K. Laitphlang. |
