RESULT OF THE RONGJENG BYE-ELECTION DECLARED

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Mr. Desang M Sangma was today declared elected as the winning candidate in the Bye-Election to the 39-Rongjeng Assembly Constituency by defeating his nearest rival Mr. Sujit Sangma, Independent candidate and former MLA by a margin of 4,671 votes.

Mr. Desang M Sangma who contested on the NCP ticket secured 7,415 votes out of 14,723 votes counted, whereas Mr. Sujit Sangma who contest as an Independent candidate secured 2,744 votes only.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) Party candidate Mr. Mettrinson Momin secured only 2,342 votes and Mr. Ashutosh Marak sitting MDC of the GHADC, who contested as an Independent candidate secured only 2,222 votes.

Further counting of votes began at 8.00 AM in which the total votes counted were 14,723 and the result was declared at 9.00 AM.

WAITING LIST OF PMRY BENEFICIARIES DISPLAYED

The PMRY Task Force Committee of East Khasi Hills District has displayed the waiting list result of PMRY beneficiaries for the year 2006-2007 on the 6th December, 2006. Candidates are requested to check their result from the Office Notice Board of District Industries Centre, Shillong. The selected beneficiaries re directed to report to the District Industries Centre Shillong o the 14th December 2006 at 12 noon sharp for detailed briefing-cum-motivation.

DISTRICT LEVEL INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION HELD AT BAGHMARA

The Annual District Industrial Exhibition organized by the District Industries Centre, Baghmara, got underway here at Government Secondary School playground, Baghmara, on December 6, 2006. The event was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, South Garo Hills, Mrs. R. D. Marak.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Marak opined that the exhibition was an excellent opportunity for local artisans, craftsmen and entrepreneurs to showcase their talent and at the same time learn from others. Owing to the Baghmara’s proximity to the International border, Mrs. Marak urged upon the concerned departments to explore the possibility of opening international markets to facilitate trade between local traders and artisans with those form across the border. She also formed the gathering that officials from state MIDC department would be conducting an Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme at Baghmara sometime early next year and called upon the people particularly the educated local youth to avail the opportunity for development of self-employment avenues.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Shri. J. L. Mawiong General Manager, DIC Baghmara, Mrs. B. R. Marak, DHO, Baghmara and Mrs. J. Ch. Sangma and one of the participants.

Besides, local artisans as well as those from different districts of Garo Hills and Shillong, government department like Agriculture, Horticulture etc opened set up stalls displaying their products in the exhibition.

TRAINING ON BIRD FLU CONTROL ORGANISED AT TURA

A day-long training for the Veterinary and Forest officers on “Control and Containment of Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza (HPAI)” commonly known as Bird Flu, was organized by the AH & Veterinary department in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairy, Union Ministry of Agriculture, at the Circuit House, Tura on December 6, 2006.

The main resource persons for the training were the Additional Director Of IAH & VB, Kolkata, Dr. J. L. Chakraborty and Joint Director, Regional Disease Diagnostics Laboratory (Eastern Region), Dr. (Capt) A. G. Bandhyopadhyay. Delivering, the inaugural address, the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Mr. P. Sampath Kumar, who is also the Chairman of the District Task Force on Avian Flu, said that the programme holds greater significance for us in Meghalaya as tha State has to mostly depend on other states for its poultry and its proximity to Bangladesh increased its vulnerability to the disease. He added that this training would help us greatly in understanding the disease and to deal with it.

The inaugural session was chaired by the Director, AH & Veterinary, Meghalaya, Dr. D. Khonglah, while Dr. Chakraborty highlighted on bird Flu incidence in the country.

Earlier in the morning, the Deputy Commissioner also inaugurated the newly constructed Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Dakopgre, Tura. According to the Project Officer, ICDP, Dr. T. B. Newar, the laboratory has been constructed under Centrally sponsored Scheme called the Assistance to State for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD).

It was also informed that all kinds of animal diseases can be diagnosed in this laboratory, except for Bird Flu disease. All necessary equipment has already been brought and would be installed very soon.

SINGING AND DANCING COMPETITION AT NONGPOH

The Ri Bhoi Students Union (RBSU) organized Singing and Dancing Competition in aid of Holy Heart Orphanage, Killing at the Indoor Stadium, Nongpoh on December 6, 2006. Chairman MEDC and local MLA, Dr. D. D. Lapang was the chief guest on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lapang highly appreciated RBSU for organizing the programme not only to expose the hidden talents among the people but also to raise funds for the orphanage which he termed as one of the noble services that the Union could render. Pointing out that many NGOs in Ri Bhoi do not stick to their agenda, he urged upon the RBSU to continue on the right by concentrating to work for the welfare of the people particularly the student community and to desist from politics.

Earlier, Dr. Lapang, accompanied by the local MDC, Mr. C. B. Syiem held a meeting in the Circuit House, Nongpoh with Mr. E. Kharmalki, ADM, the Executive Engineers of PWD, PHE MeSEB, Assistant E. E, MeSEB, Branch Mangers of Ka Bank Nongkyndong and Indian Bank. Public Leaders, Members of Nongpoh Town Committee and Rangbah Shnongs. The main agenda discussed during the meeting were implementation of developmental schemes, electricity bill and financing process to the people by the Banks etc.

NATIONAL LAND CONSERVATION WEEK HELD

The valedictory function of the National Land Conservation Week was observed on December 5, 2006 on the theme “Our Land our Future” at the conference hall of the Directorate of Agriculture, Shillong. The function was attended by the Commissioner & Secretary, Agriculture, Mr. P Kharkongor.

In his speech, Mr. Kharkongor congratulates the Agriculture Department for holding the celebration and exhorted the students present from various schools to wisely and appropriately apply science and technology to nurture and conserve mother earth.

Later, Mr. Kharkongor distributed the prizes and certificates to various winners of the essay and drawing competition conducted during the celebration. The Department also awarded the cash prize and citation to Bethany Society in recognition of its leading contribution towards conservation of land and its resources through advocating the use of bio fertilizers and playing a leading role in organic farming practices in the State.

It may be mentioned that the celebration in Meghalaya was observed from November 27, 2006 to December 5, 2006.

SECTION 144 CRPC PROMULGATED

In view of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Complex at Upper Shillong to be held on December 8, 2006 at 1.00 PM, the District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has promulgated an order under section 144 CrPC prohibiting holding of any demonstration/ rally/taking out of a procession, shouting of slogans, carrying of arms and other lethal weapons and assembly of five or more persons within 500 meters radius around tri junction point at 5th Mile Upper Shillong.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and remains in force till further orders.
