Press Release No. 67/11 STATE LEVEL WORKSHOP FOR DISABILITY Shillong, 16th February 2011: Meghalaya Minister for Social Welfare, Mr. J A Lyngdoh today inaugurated the State Level Workshop on implementation on UNCRDP and Disability Evaluation and Certification at Hotel Pinewood, Shillong. The 2 days State Level Workshop for Disabilities is being organized by the Office of the Commissioner for Person with Disabilities (PWD) in collaboration with the National Institute of Empowerment for Person with Multiple Disabilities Chennai and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. ‘Every disabled person has a dignity to lead a normal life without discrimination’ said Mr. Lyngdoh, who grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. He further extended that every individual should be aware on the PWD Act, adding that the United Nation Convention Right for Person with Disabilities(UNCRPD) should be protect and promote the dignity of disabled person He further stated that disabled persons have the same fundamental rights as the fellow citizens of the society. Mr. Lyngdoh also said that the role of disability organizations should be a continuing process and the PWD Act, need to be looked into on a priority basis. Stating that NGOs have a very big role to play in lobbying and collaborating with the government on any necessary administrative or policy changes, Mr. Lyngdoh hopes that this workshop will bring success in identifying the morale and dignity of disabled person. Meanwhile the Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, Mr. N S Samant called upon the NGOs, Medical Practitioners and the Society as a whole to focus on the rights and respect guaranteed to disabled person. He also said that every disability person has equal satisfaction, mobility and participation and they should not be deprived of their rights. Ms. I R Sangma, Commissioner for Person with Disabilities delivered the welcome speech. |
