Press Release No. 46/24 LEGAL AWARENESS ON WOMEN AND CHILD RIGHTS AND CHILD LABOUR FOR TRADITIONAL HEADS HELD A One-Day “Legal Awareness on Women & Child Rights & Child Labour” for Traditional Heads (Nokmas and its representatives) was held at SMELC, Dakopgre, Tura on 17th February, 2024. The programme was held in collaboration with District Administration, West Garo Hills, Tura and Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI) Shillong and sponsored by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) Government of India. Speaking during the inaugural session, President, Council of Nokmas Skylance G Momin highlighted the importance of Legal Rights on Women and Child Rights, and that Nokmas should be aware of these rights not only for their understanding but to raise awareness among the people in their areas. Further, he also mentioned about the matrilineal system, inheritance and ownership and said that the role of women in the society is very important however, women are not given due importance many times and taken for granted. Mentioning about the numerous household activities and sacrifices women does for her family, he said that men should also appreciate and express gratitude for their hard work and perseverance. He further apprised the members about child rights and advised them to raise awareness among the people not to practice child labour stating that there are stringent laws for violators. Moreover, he informed that Radio and television broadcasts regularly in Garo programmes on legal rights with regard to women and child rights and they can listen to these also. Meanwhile, in the Technical Session “Gender as a Social Construct on the basis of Meghalaya” and “Inclusive Public Governance” was delivered by Ivyreen Warjri, Assistant Director, Good Governance Cell, MATI, Shillong while “Building Community response on Domestic Violence in Meghalaya & Sharing on data relating to crisis against women”, was delivered by I Ryngksai, State Coordinator, North East Network, Shillong. Further, the “Concept of Child Rights, Children Issues, Child Labour in the Context of Meghalaya and India-Role of Education Institution, Community and FBO’s” and Child Trafficking and Government policies and programme for women and children of disadvantaged sections of society and POSCO Act: Introduction and Remedial measures, Sexual abuse of Children at Home, School and other recreational Institution- Role of Various Stakeholders” was explained by District Child Protection Officer, Tura Dency Marak while the “Role of Judiciary in the Protection and Prevention of Child Labour, Abuse of Children and Women’s rights was delivered by Rania K Marak, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, DLSA, Tura. The Adviser to the Council of Nokmas, Daniel Ingty, General Secretary, Nokma Council, Tura and Nokma Nogorpara Danny Marak, Executive Member, Council of Nokmas were among others who spoke during the inaugural session. |
Press Release No. 47/24 PROMOTION ACTIVITIES FOR KHELO INDIA UNIVERSITY GAMES 2023 In a dynamic display of enthusiasm, the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs Government of Meghalaya today organised a series of promotional activities in Shillong, paving the way for the highly anticipated 4th edition of the Khelo India University Games. The day kicked off with the vibrant Starting Point-Kyndailad event, setting the stage for an exhilarating line-up that included the flag-off of a thrilling bike rally and a mesmerizing flash mob titled Flash mob. The Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills district, Smt. R.M Kurbah, took centre stage as she flagged off the bike rally and joined the electrifying flash mob, accompanied by other dignitaries. Addressing the gathered crowd at Kyndailad, Smt. R.M Kurbah expressed her excitement about the massive turnout, with more than 500 participants expected to participate in the forthcoming games. She passionately emphasized that the Khelo India University Games serve as a powerful catalyst, inspiring the youth to cultivate a deeper interest in sports. Smt. Kurbah underscored the symbiotic relationship between sports and education, emphasizing that the two must go hand in hand for the holistic development of individuals. She proclaimed that nurturing both sportsmanship and academic excellence is essential for creating well-rounded individuals. Press Release No. 48/24 MEGHALAYA'S SPORTS MINISTER INAUGURATES THE KHELO INDIA UNIVERSITY GAMES 2023 The Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2023 commenced today in the city. Meghalaya's Sports Minister Shri Shakliar Warjri inaugurated the event at SAI, in NEHU Campus Shillong, joined by Deputy Commissioner Smt. R.M Kurbah, DGP Meghalya Dr. L.R Bishnoi, Prof. D .K Nayak Acting Vice Chancellor NEHU and other sports officials and participants. Meghalaya Sports Minister Shri Shakliar Warjri while addressing the Athletes said the state Government is working hand in hand with the Central Government to promote sport in the Country. He also said Khelo India University Games 2023 is to promote sports in the state and in the country, Meghalaya is trying to promote sports to the youth of the state by holding competitions. We will see one day our youth will shine. He further said the youth of our country have a lot of talent, and he hopes that one day some of the athletes who took part at this event will represent their own respective states and even for the Country. Warjri further said that more than 33 Universities are taking part in the Khelo India University Games 2023 in the state. He wished all the athletes the very best, he urged them to make use of this opportunity, advising them to believe in themselves. Once you believe in yourself, your dream will be fulfilled, if not today it may be tomorrow. He also said life is a learning process, keep working hard you will succeed one day. |
