22 VILLAGES AWARDED NIRMAL GRAM PURASKAR FUNDS

Shillong, 22 February 2010: Twenty one villages from West Garo Hills District were today awarded with the Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) monetary funds under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) Programme in a grand function at the Tura District Auditorium, Tura.

Shri. Sanjay Goyal, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and awarded the funds to the beneficiaries. Besides NGP funds, TSC funds were also VWSC’s for construction of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) for BPL under Total Sanitation Campaign Programme to hundred and twenty villages (120) villages from the eight blocks of the District. Cash awards of rupees ten lakhs each were also given to two NGOs namely WGHCRMS and BAKDIL. Speaking in the occasion, Shri Sanjay Goyal stated that six hundred IHHLs had been built so far from year 2004 had been set up since 2004 till 2009 and added with an aim to intensify and enhance the administration’s endeavours to create a totally sanitized District he uninitiated the Community Led Total Sanitation or the CLTS Programme. He further stated that around 130 odd villages have come forward willing to take up the sanitation project. 8500 households have been credited with funds to built IHHLS in their respective villages. He also congratulated the Executive Engineer, PHE, his SDOs and the Block Coordinators for their efforts.

The Total Sanitation Campaign in the District has taken an over drive with Shri Patrick K. Marak, Executive Engineer, PHE, specifically stating that the District Administration was totally committed to eradicating open defecation in the District by the year 2012. He also stated that under the able leadership of Shri Sanjay Goyal the innovative sanitation project, the CLTS has gone a long way in achieving these objectives. Father Sunny in his address urged all those present to strive for a disease free environment and grasp the sanitation projects as a means to do so.

Shri. Ambrose Ch Marak, ADC. West Garo Hills, Shri Patrick k Marak, Executive Engineer, PHE, Father Sunny, Director, BAKDIL, Shri Senti Jamir, Project Director, WGHCRMS, officers from the District Administration and other officials, block coordinators were present at the function.

RECOMMENDATION FOR KABIR PURASKAR AWARD

Shillong, 22 February 2010: The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District. Shillong has informed that the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs has instituted a National Award designated Kabir Puraskar for honouring the persons who show physical or moral courage in saving life and property of members of another community, caste or ethnic group.

The awards will be conferred in accordance to three categories, they are Grade I, Grade II and III carrying a cash amount of rupees two lakhs, one lakh and fifty thousand respectively along with a citation.

Intending individuals from East Khasi Hills District, who desire their names to be recommended to the Government for the Award, are required to send their nominations to the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong on or before the 12th of April, 2010.
