WORLD EARTH HOUR

Shillong, March 26, 2010: The State Council of Science Technology and Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya invites all citizens of Shillong to join hands with the rest of the world in observing “World Earth Hour” by switching off their lights for an hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on 27th March, 2009 to contribute towards reducing the climate change.

It may be mentioned that the Council in collaboration with the 93.5 RED FM is also conducting an ‘Open Slogan Contest’ on the theme ‘Save Our Planet Earth’. Interested individuals can SMS their slogan which should not be more than ten words to 58585 by typing SH (Space), their names and slogans starting from 29th March, 2010 to 13th April, 2010. Ten best slogans will be aired on Red FM for voting by listeners from the 15th- 21st April, 2010. Based on the numbers of votes garnered, one slogan in English and another in Khasi will be awarded on the 22nd April, 2010 which is the World Earth Day.

ILLEGAL FISHING METHODS PROHIBITED

Shillong, March 26, 2010: The Additional District Magistrate has promulgated an Order under Section 144 CrPC in West Garo Hills prohibiting the use of illegal fishing methods like local poison, bleaching powder, DDT, generators, dynamite, etc in the streams and rivers of the District with immediate effect.

The prohibitory order was necessitated in view of the complaints that some people were resorting to fishing through such illegal methods from the stream and rivers in the District.

The Additional District Magistrate in his order stated that such rampant use of illegal methods were likely to endanger aquatic life, leading to mass destruction of local and rare species of fish besides contaminating the water, adding that, emergent steps were required to be taken to prevent such illegal and wanton destruction of aquatic life.
