FOUNDATION STONE OF DAE-CANCER WING AT SHILLONG CIVIL HOSPITAL LAID BY CM

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister, incharge Health & Family Welfare, Mr Rowell Lyngdoh today laid the foundation stone of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Civil Hospital Cancer Wing at the Shillong Civil Hospital complex, Shillong.

The objective of cancer wing is to establish a comprehensive cancer facility augmenting the present cancer cell at Shillong Civil Hospital which will ease the problems of the cancer patients who have to travel outside the State for treatment. It also aims at developing Human Resource Development programme and Research activities. The wing will be equipped with the State of the Art equipments for the purpose. The total estimated amount for setting up of the cancer wing is around Rs 26 crores. The Detailed Project Report for the purpose was prepared in 2008 and the approval was received from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in 2010. The main wing of the building is expected to be completed in 18 months time.

Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma while speaking on the occasion expressed concern over the prevalent cases of cancer in the State and said that the State Government is making efforts in providing all necessary support to make available the facilities for Diagnosis, detection and treatment of Cancer. This initiative by the State Government will ease the problems of the cancer patients especially the BPL families in which the treatment and medicines will be free of cost, he added.

Dr Mukul also informed that the Health Sector is one of the top most priorities of the State Government programmes. He said that the Government is committed to ensure that health care facilities are provided to the people. He said that aggressive publicity campaigns and awareness programmes should be organized so that the people, especially in the rural areas, are aware about the different health programmes of the Government and avail the facilities provided. To achieve the objective of the health programmes of the State Government, he urge upon the Doctors to live up to the expectations of the people.
