NORTH EAST REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON REHABILITATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

A two day North East Regional Workshop on Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities on 8th and 9th March, 2017 was inaugurated today by Shri H. Marwein, Additional Chief Secretary in-charge Social Welfare Department at Moreau Institute of Integral Training, Shillong. The Regional Workshop was organized by Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for Speech and Hearing Disabilities (AYJNISHD), Mumbai, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Meghalaya, the State Resource Centre on Disability Affairs and Bethany Society, Shillong. The objective of the Regional Workshop is to familiarize the participants on the latest technology in the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities with special focus on the subjects of Clinical Services, Educational Services and Skill Development programmes. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Marwein hopes that the deliberations and presentations in the workshop will provide opportunity to all the participants to understand the importance of the issues pertaining to rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. He expressed hope that the two day workshop will come up with decisions and strategies to enhance the skills of the workers in the field to help persons with disabilities. “To empower persons with disabilities”, Mr. Marwein opined that all stakeholders need to come together in providing opportunities for persons with disabilities in the educational field, vocational training and assistance for employment. The Workshop was also attended by Dr. A. K. Sinha, Director, AYJNISHD, Mumbai, Smti C. Kharkongor, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. (Mrs) B.Mawlong, Project Director and State Coordinator, State Resource Center on Disability Affairs, Civil Hospital, Shillong and participants drawn from the State Government, NGOs working for the welfare of Persons with Disabilities from the north eastern region. It may be mentioned that the workshop will not only be based on theoretical presentation but would involve practical exposure and brainstorming on early identification of and intervention for persons with disabilities. The resource persons includes Dr. A. K. Sinha, Director, AYJNISHD, Mumbai, Shri R. Bhattacharya, HOD, SERD and Nodal Officer North-East, AYJNISHD, Shri Vavnath Jagdale and Shri A. Das, Vocational Counselors, AYJNISHD, Shri Himanshu Kumar and Shri Saikat Das, Lecturers, ERC, Kolkata, Shri S. K. Seal, Programme Manager, State Resource Centre, Shillong and Shri C. Noronha, Executive Director, Bethany Society, Shillong.
