2 DAY HEALTH MELA INAUGURATED IN BYRNIHAT

Shillong, March 19, 2010: The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Shri Akash Deep Singh inaugurated a two day Health Mela organised by the District Health Society Ri Bhoi at Byrnihat PHC on 18th March, 2010. Other dignitaries present in the event were Dr. A. S. Das, DM&HO, Ri Bhoi District Shri. A. Nongbri, State Programme Manager, NRHM, Dr. A.S. Kynjing, Director of Health Services cum Joint Mission Director, HRHM along with large number of local people.

Speaking in the occasion Akash Deep Singh said that the Health Mela which is being implemented under the NRHM was an opportunity for the people to avail quality health care services with essential pathological tests, medicines along with information free of cost.

He also said that the government is committed to ensure that all should have access to health care facilities adding that health care is one of the top priorities of the state government. He also stressed on the need to upgrade the Byrnihat PHC into a CHC to be able to cater the need of the people and provide better health facilities.

The meeting was presided by Dr. C. M. Pdah, District Tuberculosis Officer.

ONE DAY AWARENESS PROGRAMME HELD AT SOHRA

Shillong, March 19, 2010: With a view to generate awareness on the effects of Traditional Lime Kilns to Health and Environment among stakeholders, village headmen, NGOs and general public, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Shillong conducted a one day awareness programme at the Conference Hall of the Sub-Divisional Officer (C) Sohra Sub-Division wherein Dr. B D R Tiwari, Additional Deputy Commissioner i/c Sohra Civil Sub-Division was the Chief Guest.

In his inaugural speech, Dr. Tiwari said that lime use is a unique practice of the Khasi Jaintia people and lime trading has been the main source of livelihood especially for the people of the area. Lamenting over the rampant mining of lime which has degraded the environment, he stressed upon the use of scientific ways of mining which is much eco-friendly and pollution free so that the environment is not affected. He therefore, called upon the people to cooperate and protect the environment for the survival of mankind.

Later in the day, experts from various government departments delivered their views and opinions about the use of tradition lime kilns and its various impact to health and environment.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were Mr. J J Borah, Scientist, North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, Dr. Z Changsan, Central Pollution Control Board, North East Zonal office, Dr. N Syiemiong, Medical Officer i/c Laitkynsew, Mr. D Hooro, Member Secretary Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and Dr. B Nongbri, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board.

CENSUS 2011 TO BE CARRIED OUT FROM APRIL

Shillong, March 19, 2010: The Director of Census Operations, Meghalaya, Shillong has informed that the 2011 Census will be conducted in the State of Meghalaya from April 1, 2010. The Census will be conducted in two phases, the Houselisting and Housing Census which will be carried out from 1st April, 2010 to 15th May, 2010 and the Population Enumeration, which will be conducted from 9th-28th February, 2011.

Therefore all members of the public are requested to cooperate with the Census Enumerators in providing the needed information so as to make this exercise a success.
