STATE LEVEL SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL FAIR TO BE HELD AT NEHU

Shillong, March 2, 2010: As part of the National Science Day celebration this year, the State Council of Sciences, Technology and Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya is organizing a 3 (three) day State Level Science and Environmental Fair 2010 during the 3rd to 5th March 2010. The programme will be held at the Shillong Science Centre, NEHU Permanent Campus, Mawlai Mawkynroh, Shillong from 10:00 AM to 5PM. Shri. B. P. O Warjri, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government Meghalaya will grace the inaugural function as Chief Guest which will be held on 3rd March 2010 at 10:30 AM. Around 300 (three hundred) students from all over the State will be participating in the event. Besides various Science and Technology promotional activities, environmental awareness programmes will also be organized during the event. Other activities includes ‘fire-walking demonstration’ which will be held on the 5th march 2010 at 3.00 PM

STATE LEVEL AND DISTRICT MONITORING COMMITTEES FORMED

Shillong, March 2, 2010: The Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Information and Public Relations Department have constituted the State Monitoring Committees at the State Level and District Monitoring Committees at the District Level to enforce the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. These Committees are required to perform the role of monitoring the content being shown on TV channels at the local level.

At the State Monitoring Committee the Commissioner & Secretary, Information & Public Relations is the Chairman, and the members include Station Director, Doordarshan Kendra, Shillong, Station Director, All India Radio, Shillong, Secretary, Information & Public Relations, President, Meghalaya Union of Journalist and the Member Secretary is Director of Information and Public Relations.

The terms of reference of the State Monitoring Committee is to see that the District Monitoring Committee meetings are held regularly, to over see that the authorized officers are effectively performing their duties, to review cases if any, and the manner these cases are handled, to provide suggestions and information from District Level Committee and forward it to the Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, to recommend action and to forward complaints against satellite channels (National Channels) to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting through the Chief Secretary of the State in cases of violation of the Government of India’s orders on the Programme and Advertising Codes.

At the District Monitoring Committee, the Deputy Commissioner of the concerned District is the Chairman, and the members include Station Director or Representative, Doordarshan Kendra, Station Director or Assistant Station Director, All India Radio, Local Prominent personality to be nominated by the Deputy Commissioner and the Member Secretary is the Assistant Director of Information & Public Relations or District Public Relation Officer of concerned District.

The terms and references of the District Monitoring Committee is to provide a forum where the public may lodge a complaint regarding content aired over cable television and take action on the same as per procedure prescribed, to review the action taken by the Authorized Officers for enforcement to Cable Television Networks (Regulations) Act, 1955, to immediately bring to the notice of the State and Central Government if any programme is affecting public order or wide spread resentment in any community, to keep watch on content carried by the Cable TV channels and to ensure through the Authorized Officers, that no unauthorized or pirated channels are carried, to look into that the local news if aired by the cable television operator is restricted to information base on local events and is presented in an authentic manner and to monitor the availability of free to air channels and channels notified for mandatory carriage on the cable network.
