GOVERNOR INAUGURATES SEMINAR

A two-day Seminar on ‘Industrial Scenario in the North Eastern States’ was inaugurated today by the Meghalaya Governor, Mr. M.M. Jacob at the Conference Centre of the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly, Shillong. Also present as the Guest of Honour was the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, etc., Mr. Lambor Malngiang. The Seminar is being organised by the Shillong Commerce College and sponsored by the North Eastern Council, Shillong.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Jacob said that growth in industrial sector will be of critical importance for the North Eastern Region to be at par with the mainstream India in terms of socio-economic development. Stating that though the North East Region is rich in natural resources which can feed industries of all descriptions, the industrial landscape in the region reflects a lopsided pattern, mainly due to lack of infrastructural facilities, marketing facilities, lack of trained skilled personnel, demographic isolation of the region, etc. Therefore, the Central Government has come out with a specific policy to promote industrial growth in the region by way of attractive packages of incentives being offered to those investing in the region and this policy has yielded good results in States like Assam and Meghalaya, Mr. Jacob added.

With regard to industrial development in the North Eastern Region, Mr. Jacob stressed that the task cannot rest on Governments alone, the benefits from the various policies and programmes will start flowing in only after the people come forward and work hand in hand with the Government. Therefore, he called upon financial institutions, promotional organizations, entrepreneurs and the general public to come together to work for a common purpose to redefine the industrial scenario in the region.

Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Lambor Malngiang, while stressing that Tourism is one of the major industries, said that Meghalaya is endowed with rich natural resources which can help boost the economy, generate revenue and employment. He added that forest-based, agro-based, mineral-based industries have a great scope in the region, besides handloom, handicrafts and small scale industries. Therefore, he hoped that the deliberations in this seminar will help find out ways and means to promote industrial sector in Meghalaya and the North East Region as a whole.
