JEEVAN RAKSHA PADAK SERIES OF AWARD, 2016

The Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs has instituted an Award designed Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Award 2016 for meritorious acts humane in nature in saving the life of a person in incidents like drowning, accidents, fire incidents, electrocution, landslides, animal attack and rescue operation in mines, etc. The award is given in three categories, viz., Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak for conspicuous courage in saving life under circumstances of very great danger to the life of the rescuer, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak for courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of great danger to the life of the rescuer and Jeevan Raksha Padak for courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of grave bodily injury to the rescuer. GOVERNOR INAUGURATES THE NATIONAL SEMINAR ON FOREIGN TRADE

A two day National Seminar on the theme “Foreign Trade- A strategy for the economic growth of the North Eastern Region of India” was inaugurated today by the Governor of Meghalaya Shri V. Shanmuganathan in the presence of Shri K.S. Kropha, Chief Secretary, Shri P.B.O. Warjri, former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, Shri J. B. Massar, Principal Shillong Commerce College among others. The inaugural function was presided over by Shri T. Mark, President, Governing Body, Shillong Commerce College, Shillong. The Seminar was organized by the Shillong Commerce College at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah which was sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Research (ICSR), North Eastern Region and University Grant Commission. The Seminar was attended by the research scholars from Guwahati University, faculty members of Shillong College, St. Anthony’s College, Tura Government College besides the students. The National Seminar was organized to provide a platform for the resource persons and participants to discuss various issues on how to bring the North East Region at par with the rest of the country with focus on foreign trade. Speaking on the occasion, Shri V. Shanmuganathan said that trade and commerce with the South East Asian Countries is essential for the economic growth of the Region. The Governor stressed the need for the North Eastern States to fully utilize the potentialities of the educated youth and to further strengthen and expand the economic ties with neighbouring countries. With the availability of rich pool of human resources and natural wealth the Governor expressed hope that these can be properly harnessed to ensure all round development of the region. The Governor expects that the paper presentations by the experts and discussions during the seminar will come out with suggestions to improve foreign trade and bring socio ecnonomic development in the region. MEMBER NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR MINORITIES VISITED MEGHALAYA

Captain Praveen Davar, Hon’ble Member, National Commission for Minorities, visited Meghalaya on the 30th and 31st March, 2016 where he met the representatives of the Minority Community and discussed with them the programme and benefits as listed under the Prime Minister’s 15 Point Programme. Views of the representatives were noted by the Member. A meeting was also held with the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District and Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, to take stock of the programme as envisaged in the PM’s 15 Point Programme. Similar meeting was also held with the representatives of the Minority Community and the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District.
