Press Release No. 155/10 MEGHALAYA LAUNCHES ROKO CANCER CAMPAIGN Shillong, April 15, 2010: The first Mobile Cancer Detection Bus for cancer screening campaign was launched by the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Pynshngain Syiem on April 15, 2010 at Civil Hospital, Shillong. Initiated by the Roko Cancer Trust, London, this programme was started by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Meghalaya in collaboration with the Cancer Society. It may be mentioned that this campaign, which is the first of its kind in the country, will prove beneficial to the local populace as it is free of cost. Highlighting the increasing rate of cancer patients in the State and the absence of required mechanism, Mr. Syiem observed that this programme would benefit the people of the State especially the low income group. He further stated that this programme will educate the general public regarding the benefits of screening and early detection, to enable people to come forward and get treated when chance of cure is possible. He also praised the Officers for having inducted this programme. Mr. D. P .Wahlang, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Health Department, in his brief speech as the Guest of Honour, informed that this campaign will not only detect breast cancer but will also detect oral and cervix cancer which is prevalent in the State. The campaign will kick start from April 19, 2010 with two mobile units. The Shillong campaign will start from April 19, 2010 while the Tura campaign will start from the month of July. Press Release No. 156/10 PINE BROOK SCHOOL ANNUAL SPORT CONCLUDED Shillong, April 15, 2010: “A good performance of the students shows the determination and hard working nature of the teachers of the school,” said the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. D. D. Lapang, while speaking as the Chief Guest at the concluding function of the Annual School Sports Meet 2010 of Pine Brook Secondary School, Umbang on April 15, 2010. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lapang lauded Dr. I. Ben Wati the founder of the school for his missionary zeal and ambition. Stressing the need of quality leaders to run the State and Country as a whole, he called upon the teachers to instill upon the students the spirit of leadership and vision which will make a difference in the society. He also opined that the school will continue in its endeavor to educate students and make them pioneers and assets of the State. Other present on the occasion includes Mr. Fabian Lyngdoh, MDC, Mr. H.
