ONE YEAR OF MUA GOVERNMENT

Shillong, April 20, 2011: The MUA Government has accomplished one year in office today, the 20th April, 2011. In a function held at the Pinewood Hotel, Shillong, a booklet chronicled the one-year achievement titled “3600 Development in 365 Days” was released by the Chief Minister, Government of Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul Sangma.

In his speech, Dr. Sangma said that the government has gone through trying situations but has come out of its hurdles through the support and cooperation of the officers, staff and the people at large. He expressed his gratitude to his cabinet colleagues, his coalition partners, officers, staff and the people for their wholehearted support that they have rendered for the overall development of the State. Emphasizing the need to keep the promise for a change in the State, Dr. Sangma said that in its humble beginning, the government has tried its best to initiate developmental activities to bring a constructive change to the State and the achievement that the government has made in one year reflects its commitment to that promise. While ensuring convergence of efforts of all developmental departments at the District, Directorate and Government level, Dr. Sangma said that there has been an improvement in mechanism which has derived optimum benefit for the people of the State. Underlining the need for inclusive politics, he said that involvement and commitment of the stakeholders, which include the peoples’ representatives, officers, staff and the public is very much needed in successful implementation of programmes and schemes. Referring to the Inter State border and Uranium Mining which have been pending issues till date, Dr. Sangma said that his government is addressing these issues through inclusive politics in finding answers to all apprehensions, adding that the government is strong in its commitment to solve the border dispute by adopting the resolution to constitute the Border Commission which includes all stakeholders.

In its initiative to ensure transparency and accountability in governance, Dr. Sangma said that the Government felt the need to introduce social auditing for all State Government Departments and hope that the draft Social Audit Bill through Legislation which is in the process will guarantee that the government schemes and programmes benefit the public. Therefore, he called upon all stakeholders, political, organizations and the people to work collectively in realizing the dreams and aspirations of the people of the State.

Referring to the financial stability of the State, Dr. Sangma said that the MUA government has ensured that the fiscal health is maintained adding that the State is among the best in the North East alongwith Assam.

In its quest to empower the youth of the State, the Chief Minister said that the government is focusing on youth centric development programmes which will include addressing unemployment programme and intitiate youth based activities. He also informed that the year 2012-2013 will be observed as the Year of the Youth and he hoped that the initiatives of the government will bear the desired fruit.

Therefore he called upon all concerned to move ahead unitedly and rededicate their commitment to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the people of the State. He expressed hope that the government will travel in a journey with a new vision and direction and live up to its promise for the wellbeing of the State.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Deputy Chief Ministers, Mr. B M Lanong and Mr. R Lyngdoh.
