HOME MINISTER HELD EMERGENT MEETING

Shillong, April 24, 2012: Mr. H.D.R. Lyngdoh, Home Minister, Government of Meghalaya convened an emergent meeting with the Principal Secretary, Home (Police) Department, the Director General of Police, the Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya and the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District in his office chamber on the 24th April, 2012 at 4:30PM to take stock of the prevailing law and order situation and the arrangements made by the Administration to deal with agitation programme of road blockade announced by some organizations. Since the agitation is directed against the alleged enrolment of ineligible voters in the electoral rolls, the Home Minister sought feedback on the matter from the officers from the Election Department. It was clarified by them that the Special and continuous enrolment of eligible voters is being carried out strictly in accordance with the statutory provisions and the guidelines/instructions issued by the Election Commission, following the due process as stipulated under the Statute or by the Election Commission. It was also clarified that the statute provides for filing objections against inclusion of ineligible voters, and if the objection is established, the names could then also be deleted from the Electoral Rolls.

The Home Minister felt that while the process of enrolment as per law and as directed by the Election Commission should continue, the electoral authorities should ensure that the integrity of the process is not compromised in any manner. The Home Minister, therefore, appeals for the organizations to take recourse for the avenue provided under the law and not to resort to agitation, which causes immense hardship to the general public

The Director General of Police and the Deputy Commissioner, Shillong informed the Home Minister that the security arrangements have been geared up fully and any attempts to disturb peace and order shall be dealt with firmly and swiftly.

AMPATI CITIZENS FORUM FELICITATES THE CM

Shillong, April 23, 2012: Ahead of the much awaited inauguration of new district at Ampati, the Ampati Citizens’ Forum organised a felicitation program for the Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma which also coincides with the Entrepreneur Conclave under the Integrated Basin Development Programme on the 23rd April 2012 at Mini Stadium, Ampati. Visibly delighted Dr. Sangma, while addressing the gathering, said that his government has been able to fulfill the promises that have been made and efforts are being made by the Government to provide opportunities for the people especially those living in the rural areas of the State. Speaking about the commitment of the government under his leadership, Dr Mukul said that everyone in the Government is working overtime to ensure that the plans and programmes of the government are implemented effectively.

While ensuring commitment that the Government will work tirelessly towards poverty alleviation, Dr Mukul said that the main objective of the plans of the government is to address the problems of the people and to free the State of poverty which has been one of the main stumbling blocks towards development. He informed about the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme which he said that it has been designed in a mission mode intervention in different areas of livelihood programmes. He also said that the intention of the government is reflected in the budget provisions allocated to different departments in which some of the developmental departments were allocated with a budget provision of 100 percent increase during the current financial year. He also stated that the objective of the government is to encourage the people to partner with the government in different sectors of development particularly in tourism, agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture and others. Expressing concern over the high incidents of migration of the rural people to the urban areas, Dr Mukul said that the government is pro-active in tackling the situation by providing ample livelihood opportunities through the Integrated Basin Development Programme which he is confident would mitigate the issue. Dr Sangma, while congratulating the people of Ampati Sub Division for being identified as one of the new districts of the State, said that Ampati deserves to be upgraded into a District as it is the farthest Sub Division from the State Capital, Shillong besides being one of the Sub division located in the International border with Bangladesh. Ampati as a new district would be inaugurated towards the end of May this year, he informed. Later in the evening, Dr Mukul also inaugurated the Multi Facility Centre at Ampati constructed by the C&RD Department under the RSVY Scheme.
