WORKSHOP ON MAINSTREAMING DRR HELD

Shillong, April 17, 2013: The District Disaster Management Authority, West Jaintia Hills District, on April 16, 2013, organized a one day Workshop on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) into development for Government Functionaries in DC’s Conference Hall, Jowai.

Role and responsibilities of Government functionaries on social support during and after disaster and Meghalaya Bye Laws 2011 were the topics discussed at the workshop. The resource persons were Dr.R.Toi, District School Health Officer, Jowai and P.Prakash, E.E Urban affairs, Jowai.

MEETING ON WATER CRISIS HELD AT RESUBELPARA

Shillong, April 17, 2013: The North Garo Hills District Water Management and Preservation Committee, Resubelpara, held a meeting on April 16, 2013 under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. W. Khyllep, to discuss and work out solutions to water crisis in the district.

As a short term solution to the problem, the meeting decided to explore possibilities of constructing borewells in and around the district. It also decided that the public taps be shut down during the crisis period to prevent unnecessary wastage of water. It was also decided in the meeting that the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council would be asked to identify and notify the catchment areas in the district. The committee would also ask the Nokmas, Sordars, etc., to protect the catchment areas, to plant trees around the catchment areas and to restrict jhum cultivation around such areas.

The meeting stressed on the need for water harvesting and storage of rain water to be taken up under the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme (IBDLP). The Nokmas / sordars, etc, would also be called to create awareness on the issue among the people in their respective areas.

The meeting was attended by officials of the PHE department and prominent citizens and nokmas of the area as public representatives.

The meeting also decided to involve the departments of Soil & Water Conservation, Agriculture, Forest, as well as the BDOs, Nokmas and local leaders as part of the committee, which would meet once every month.

INDIAN RED CROSS EXTENDS HELP TO CYCLONE VICTIMS

Shillong, April 17, 2013: The Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya State Branch handed over the relief materials like plastic buckets, bedsheets, blankets, kitchen set, tarpaulins and mosquito nets to the Extra Assistant Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District for the distribution to the affected families of Mawshynrut village which was recently hit by cyclone.

NOTICE

Shillong, April 17, 2013: The Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills has informed that on 24.3.2013 one unidentified male person (about 45 years) was found lying at Lawmali Junction, Shillong and he was shifted to Civil Hospital Shillong for medical treatment. On 12.4.2013, the said person has expired at the hospital and his dead body is kept at Civil Hospital Morgue for identification. Any person having knowledge of the said person can contact Shillong Police Control Room at 0364-2222277.
