4TH STATE AQUA FEST 2017 HELD

The Department of Fisheries, Government of Meghalaya today organised the 4th State Aqua Fest 2017 at the State Central Library premises, Shillong. Smti Roshan Warjri, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, etc., graced the occasion as Chief Guest in the presence of Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari, Secretary, Fisheries Department, Shri Ram Singh, Director, Fisheries, Shri O. Nongbri, Managing Director, Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd., Dr. S. K. Das, Principal Scientist, ICAR, Dr. R. Suresh, Senior Consultant Fisheries, National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, senior government officials and fish farmers from various parts of the State. Speaking on the occasion, Smti Warjri said the State Aquaculture Mission was launched in the State in order to enhance fish production to fill the wide growing gap between demand and supply and also to generate employment opportunities especially in the rural areas. Stressing on the need of making the State Aqua Mission a success, the Minister opined on the need to strengthen in this field by working together with the individuals, community and NGOs. She also appealed the educated unemployed youth of the State to come forward and take advantage of the various schemes offered by the Fisheries department to engage themselves in the fishery practices towards sustainable livelihood. Smti Warjri also stressed on the need to develop more sanctuaries across the State for conserving indigenous and endemic species. During the programme, the Minister also released the Training Manual for Potential Fish Farmers of Meghalaya on “Aquaculture and Advance Techniques for Fish Culture”. The Minister also distributed the Individual Awards, Community Awards and Sanctuary Awards for excellence in Fisheries Sector to acknowledge, recognize and reward the extraordinary and innovative work done by fish farmers, communities, NGOs and SHGs in the State. In the Individual category, the Awardees are Shri Worson Kharsohnoh of Kharnongwang village under Mawphlang C&RD Block, East Khasi Hills District, Shri Shanbor Sohbar of Umshiaw village under Umsning C&RD Block, Ri Bhoi District, Shri Dominic Nongsiej of Mawkynjoin village under Nongstoin C&RD Block, Shri Teiborsing Wahlang of Jakrem village under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block, Shri Bislin Lyngdoh of Sunapyrdi village under East Jaintia Hills District and Shri Willy Pohplet of Muktapur village under Amlarem C&RD Block. In the Community category, the Awardees are Hatmawdon Area Fishery Co-operative Society Ltd, Hatmawdon village under Mawsynram C&RD Block, Nangiaishlei SHG Community Fishery Project, Tiehdang village under Mawthadraishan C&RD Block, Bankyntiewlang SHG of Mawlaho village under Umsning C&RD Block and Nonglang Fishery Co-operative Society Ltd., Pyndenksing under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block. The Sanctuary Award goes to Rohbah Sanctuary, the sanctuary is protected from any form of destruction of Aquatic life by Mawthawpdah Area Rilang Fishing Association (MARFA). As part of the Fest, stalls were also set up in the State Central Library premises by various government departments, SHGs, NGOs, farmers and entrepreneurs who displayed and sell their products.

The Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District has informed an amount of Rs.21, 500 /-(Rupees Twenty one thousand five hundred) only has been sanctioned for payment of gratuitous relief to the beneficiaries affected by Natural calamities in different villages under Thadlaskein C&RD Block

INAUGURATION OF BNRGSK BUILDING FOR AEC AT UMSHAKEN VILLAGE RI BHOI DISTRICT

Dr. D.D. Lapang, local MLA and Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya inaugurated the Bharat Nirman Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra (BNRGSK) building for Umshaken Area Employment Council (AEC) on 6th April,2017. The BNRGSK building was constructed under MGNREGS of 2012-13 at the cost of Rs.10 lakhs. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lapang lauded and appreciated the initiatives taken by the village leaders and Block office for the completion of the project. He said that the government has provided many schemes to benefit residents particularly those living in rural areas with a scheme such as NREGS which has been uplift and supported the income of peoples and the village community as well. Lastly, he do hoped that the building would cater to the needs of the peoples of the area and urged them to properly maintain it for their benefit and meanwhile seeks their cooperation to work together with the government for further developments.

ARMY RECRUITMENT RALLY IN TURA

The Army recruitment rally held at Dikki Bandi Stadium, Dakopgre, Tura from 2nd to 8th April, 2017 saw a significant participation of youth from all the 11 districts of the state but mainly from the Garo Hills districts in general and West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts in particular. A total of 2811 youths were registered and 1865 candidates participated in the gruelling run of 1.6 km and other physical events under inclement weather. It may be mentioned that the awareness and preparation part of the Army recruitment rally was supported by the district administration under the Chief Minister's Career Guidance Scheme of the Government of Meghalaya. The Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills expressed his satisfaction and happiness that for the third year in a row the Army has made the effort to come down to Tura for this rally which means a lot for the youth of the region as many aspiring candidates cannot afford to take part in the Shillong recruitment rally. A part of further support to the Army recruitment rally - there shall be a two week residential course in SMELC Dakopgre for all successful students who have qualified for the physical and medical tests and who will now appear for the crucial decider- the written test. This is also an effort under the Chief Minister's Career Guidance Scheme and will be shortly advertised. Colonel A K Sinha, Director , Recruiting , Recruiting Office , Shillong showered praise on the young Army aspirants of Garo Hills region and others commending them on their sense of discipline and their commitment. He hoped that about 90-100 should make it to the final list with a little extra effort. In 2015 about 100 and in 2016 about 70 candidates qualified finally for the Army recruitment rallies held in Tura.
