DC HOLDS MEETING WITH HEADMEN AND NGOS

Shillong, May 17, 2010: The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Mr J Lyngdoh today informed that the District Administration wishes to place on record its sincere thanks and gratitude to the Headmen of different localities in Shillong and adjoining areas, NGOs and all community leaders and representatives, for their positive response and meaningful participation in the sector level meetings held in all police stations at Shillong on the 14th and 15th May 2010 in the wake of the firing incident by Assam Police at Langpih resulting in the unfortunate death and injury of local residents of the area. While expressing anguish over the unfortunate incidents, participants in these meetings resolved that they would spare no efforts to ensure that communal harmony is maintained at all costs within their jurisdiction in the larger interests of the people. Towards this end, the Malki Unit of the KSU has also risen to the occasion and decided to call off the ultimatum served earlier on Nepali residents of Malki as appeared in a section of the press.

While appreciating the maturity in approach by residents across the city, the District Administration appeals to all sections of the public to exercise maximum restraint in this time of trial. There could be attempts by vested interests to capitalize on the issue by floating misleading rumours and indulging in acts inimical to maintenance of communal harmony and law and order. These likely attempts will be dealt with a firm hand and persons responsible for disturbance of peace and tranquility will not be spared. Government has taken the matter seriously and is taking all possible steps to deal with the issue in a responsible manner. Members of the public are requested to cooperate with the administration in its sincere attempts to deal with any arising situation in the larger public interest.
