PRESIDENT CORRECTIONAL SERVICE MEDAL AWARDED POSTHUMOUSLY TO LATE LALA ROY

Shillong, May 23, 2012: In recognition to the supreme sacrifice and gallantry displayed in discharging his duty, the Meghalaya Minister for Home (Jails), Prof. R C Laloo handed over the President Correctional Service Medals posthumously to (L) Lala Roy, Warder District Jail, Jowai in a small but impressive function held at the Committee Hall, Main Secretariat, Shillong today the 23rd May, 2012. The medal and certificate was received by the widow, Mrs. Junita Roy.

This is the first time that the President’s Correctional Service Medal for Gallantry (PCSMG) has been awarded to any prison official in Meghalaya. The PCSMG was awarded to (L) Roy posthumously on the occasion of Independence Day, 2009.

It may be mentioned that (L) Lala Roy joined the Prisons Department as a Warder in October, 1989. In his 19 years of dedicated service, he served the Department with sincerity and extreme devotion. His loyalty has been proved on the morning of 13th September, 2008, when he foiled the attempted jailbreak of 12 prisoners, 5 of whom were notorious MPDA detainers, armed with sharp weapons. Despite being mortally wounded, he continued to struggle to alert the armed branch personnel who were guarding the jail. Due to his bravery and conspicuous devotion to duty inspite of grave odds, (L) Lala Roy made the supreme sacrifice to save the jail from being breached.

Prof. R C Laloo also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs. 1.00 lakh on behalf of the Department as a mark of recognition and respect for the sacrifice made by (L) Lala Roy.

Others who spoke on the occasion were Mr. H Marwein, Principal Secretary, Prisons and Mr. Kulbir Kishan, Director General of Prisons.

DY CM DISTRIBUTES EMU BIRDS TO BENEFICIARIES OF RI BHOI

Shillong, May 23, 2012: The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya i/c Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Mr. B M Lanong distributed Emu birds to the beneficiaries of Ri Bhoi District under the Special Plan Assistance scheme at a simple function held at Regional Poultry Breeding Farm, Kyrdemkulai on May 22, 2012. The function was chaired by Dr. L Lyngwa, Director of AH & Veterinary, Meghalaya.

The schemes being implemented under Special Plan Assistance in the State are dairy cows, piggery, goatery and poultry farming which includes a newly introduced birds like emu, quail and turkey.

WHOLE MEAL ATTA DISTRIBUTED

Shillong, May 23, 2012: The Deputy Commissioner (Supply) East Khasi Hills District has informed the public consumers that whole-meal atta for the month of February 2012 is being distributed through the Fair Price Shops at the scale of 1128 grams per head at the rate of Rs. 7.80 per kg.

Any non-supply or overcharging of the rate by the suppliers may be brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply) will all the details.

STATE TO OBSERVE THREE DAYS STATE MOURNING

Shillong, May 23, 2012: As a mark of respect to the sudden demise of Dr. F A Khonglam, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya who passed away on May 22, 2012, all State Government offices throughout the State shall observe a three days State mourning with effect from May 23, 2012. During the State mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half mast and there will be no official entertainment.
