CHILD LABOUR (PROHIBITION AND REGULATION) ACT 1986

Shillong, May 31, 2013: The Deputy Labour Commissioner and Member Secretary, District Task Force on Child Labour, East Khasi Hills has informed that the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 under section 3 prohibits the employment of children below 14years of age in certain employment i.e. abattoirs, slaughter houses, automobile workshops, garages, mines and collieries, domestic workers or servants, dhabas, restaurants, hotels, motel, tea shop, resorts, spas or other recreational centres, soap manufacture, tanning, building and construction industry, automobile repairs workshops, fabrication workshops, lime kilns and manufacture of lime, lock making, manufacturing of burning coal, potteries, process in agriculture, saw mills, stone breaking and stone crushing, tyre making, repairing and re-treading, utensils making, rag picking and scavenging, food processing, beverage industry, timber handling and loading, warehousing etc.

Section 3 of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 also regulates the condition of work of the children in certain other employments, added the Deputy Labour Commissioner.

According to the Deputy Labour Commissioner, whoever employs any child or permits any child to work in contravention of the provisions of section 3 of the Child Labour(Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not less than three months but which may extend to one year or with fine which shall not be less than ten thousand rupees but which may extend to twenty thousand rupees or with both.
