WORLD RED CROSS DAY OBSERVED

Along with the rest of the world, Meghalaya observed the World Red Cross Day at a function held at the Raj Bhavan, Shillong on 8th May, 2017. The programme was organized by the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Meghalaya State Branch. The theme for the celebration was ‘Everywhere for everyone’. World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year on May 8 to honour the International Red Cross Crescent Movement founder Henry Dunant, who was born on this day in 1828. Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, the Governor of Meghalaya, Shri Banwarilal Purohit, who is also the President of the IRCS, appreciated the services rendered by the Red Cross Society and called upon the people to extend their cooperation and support to the Society in their quest to serve mankind. The Governor also appealed the citizens of Meghalaya to join the Red Cross Society and serve the needy for the betterment of the society and the nation as a whole. Earlier, the Governor released the Red Cross Flag and distributed Life Membership Certificates to the Red Cross members. Meghalaya Health & Family Welfare Minister, Smti Roshan Warjri, who is the Vice President of the Society also during the programme handed over the trophies to the Principals and Headmistresses of various schools and distributed Appreciation Certificates to various Organisations, Civil Societies and stakeholders. Chairman, IRCS, Meghalaya State Branch, Shri W. R. Marbaniang, IPS (Retd), Vice Chairman, IRCS, Meghalaya State Branch, Smti A. Swer, General Secretary, IRCS, Meghalaya State Branch, Ms. D. E. Kharshiing, members and staff of the Society, Officers of various departments and school children attended the programme.
