LEGAL LITERARCY CAMPAIGN HELD

Shillong, May 12, 2011: The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) today organized Legal Literacy Campaign for school students of West Garo Hills, Tura at Tura Public School premises, Tura. The District Magistrate, West Garo Hills, Mr. V K Mantri grace the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of Mr. M L Thangal, Advocate, Mr. G Mustafa, Advocate, Mr. T M Sangma, Assistant Public Prosecutor, Tura Court and Ms. D Kharbteng, Advocate.

In his speech, Mr. Mantri informed that the Legal Literacy Campaign is being organized with an objective of disseminating the constitutional and legal rights amongst the school students, adding that the Legal Service Authority Act, 1987 makes provision for giving free legal services to various categories including any person if he or she is the member of a Schedules Caste/Schedule Tribe.

The Legal Literacy Campaign deliberated and shed light to the students on subjects ranging from FIR, bail matters, human rights and consumers protection etc.

The resource persons at the campaign included Mr. M L Thangal, Advocate, Mr. G Mustafa, Advocate, Mr. T M Sangma, Assistant Public Prosecutor, Tura Court and Ms. D Kharbteng, Advocate.

It may be mentioned here that the national Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker section of the society and to organize Lok Adalat for amicable settlement of disputes.
