CM TAKES STOCK OF DAMAGES ACROSS DISTRICTS

Hon’ble Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma held review meeting with the Deputy Commissioners of all Districts and concerned Departments to assess the prevalent situations across the State and take stock of damages caused due to incessant rains.

With landslides caused in different locations, cutting off connectivity to some areas including transit roads to other North East states, HCM has directed the DCs and Departments to take swift action in this regard especially in the supply of essential commodities to the affected areas and to look into measures to be taken to ensure movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities.

Regional Committees have been put in place with East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi Districts chaired by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Prestone Tynsong, Districts in Jaiñtia Hills chaired by Hon’ble Home Minister, Shri Lahkmen Rymbui assisted by Hon’ble Minister Shri Kyrmen Shylla, West, South West and Eastern West Khasi Hills Districts headed by Hon’ble Minister, Shri Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Garo Hills Districts headed by Hon’ble Minister, Shri James Sangma.

HCM has requested the respective Chairmen to visit the locations and constantly review the situation in the Districts. HCM has further directed DCs and Departments to monitor the situation in the next crucial 72 Hrs and coordinate in order to ensure minimum inconvenience and safety of the people.

INTERNATIONAL DOMESTIC WORKERS DAY CELEBRATED AT TURA

The State Level Convention on the occasion of International Domestic Workers Day celebration was held at SMELC, Dakopgre, Tura on 16th June, 2022 where Member of the Parliament, Tura Parliamentary Constituency Agatha K Sangma graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The theme for the celebration is Decent Work and Dignified life for Domestic Workers beyond Covid-19

Addressing the gathering, Agatha Sangma said that attending the program has given her the opportunity to know and understand the problems faced by domestic workers of the region and informed that she would try to place the National Policy of Domestic Workers Act for enactment during the Monsoon Session in the Parliament. Mentioning according to the statistics of Domestic Workers in India she said that there is a huge population of domestic workers and that more than 4.7 million women works as domestic help and is the highest working population and therefore, they also need due recognition and legal identity, she added. Further, she stated that recognizing the day as International Domestic Workers Day is itself a big achievement, she said. Stating that there are times when they may faced oppression, etc she directed the concerned departments to organize awareness programmes and workshops highlighting the rights and privileges of Domestic Workers and inform them about various schemes provided by the government.

Speaking on the occasion as Guest of Honour, Bishop of Tura, Right Reverend Bishop Andrew R Marak advised everyone not to look down upon domestic workers but try to help them by giving them what is their due and treat them with love and kindness. He also urged the domestic helpers to perform their work diligently.

The Deputy Labour Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura Olivia Momin spoke about the Payment of Wages Act and said that any domestic help should get their due for their employer and if anyone faces any problem regarding payment of wages, then the department can extend their help.

The District Social Welfare Officer, Tura Hemaritha Sangma extending her support for their cause said that they should have social security and be free from exploitation, harassment, sexual harassment, etc and get paid for their work.

Former Assistant Director, MBOSE, Tura Giribala G Momin as Employer Representative, General Counselor for Social Apostolate cum Director, Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI), Rev. Sr. Rose Paite, City Coordinator, Sr. Marietta Joseph, Saradilme K Sangma as Domestic Worker Representative were among other who spoke on the occasion. Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura Mary T Sangma, Parish Priest, Our Lady of Rosary Church, Araimile Rev. Fr. Alex, Officials of line departments, domestic helpers attended the function.
