OBSERVATION OF ANTI-MALARIA MONTH IN THE STATE

Shillong, June 5, 2013: The office of the Deputy Director of Health Services (Malaria), Government of Meghalaya is observing Anti-Malaria Month during the month of June this year. Anti-Malaria Month is being observed prior to the onset of the monsoon to enhance level of awareness, encourage community participation through mass media and interpersonal communication and consolidate inter-sectoral collaborative efforts with other Government Ministries/Departments, corporate and voluntary organizations at the State and District levels for prevention and control of malaria.

In his message to the citizens of the State, the Meghalaya Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Mr. A L Hek expressed his appreciation to the Health Department for observing Anti-Malaria Month where malaria morbidity and mortality is a major public health concern in Meghalaya. The disease is greatly affected by social and economic conditions and is a cause of poverty, he added. Stating that the marginalized sections of the rural population with limited access to quality health care and basic facilities are often the worst sufferers, the Minister, informed the people of the availability of facilities for blood slide collection, examination and treatment for malaria with the use of rapid diagnostic tools and better drugs which are being provided free of cost in all the health centers of the State especially in high endemic areas. Moreover, he said that integrated vector management like engineering methods for source reduction, larvivorous fishes, long lasting insecticide impregnated nets, Indoor Residual Spray (DDT) and logistic support have been provided through the Meghalaya State Vector Borne Disease Control Society for containing malaria.

Therefore, the Minister urged upon all citizens of the State to take active part in prevention and control of Malaria by adopting strategies laid down by the government through the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program and he also stressed that prevention and control of malaria will become successful only with the cooperation of the NGOs/FBOs, health workers and most of all through the participation of the community.

CLOSURE OF ROAD

Shillong, June 5, 2013: The Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) National Highway Division has informed that due to the repairing of Bridge at 70/860 on NH-44E, Shillong-Nongstoin at Nongspung, the road at this location will be closed for vehicular traffic with effect from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on June 9, 2013.

AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT TO HOLD WORKSHOP-CUM-TRAINING

Shillong, June 5, 2013: The Directorate of Agriculture, Meghalaya in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Mumbai will hold a one day workshop-cum-Training of Trainers (TOT) on the theme Using Mobile Phones and Internet in delivery of Agriculture Extension Services to Farmers on June 10, 2013 at the Conference Hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, 5th Mile, Upper Shillong from 10:30 AM onwards. The Joint Secretary, Agriculture Department, Ms. V R Syiem will be the Chief Guest at the inaugural function.

CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF SHILLONG BAR ASSOCIATION

Shillong, June 5, 2013: The Shillong Bar Association, Shillong celebrated its centenary celebration at So So Tham Auditorium, Shillong on 5th June 2013. The Governor of Meghalaya, Mr. R S Mooshashary was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

In his speech, Mr. R S Mooshashary said that lawyers are the warriors of criminal justice administration and have a duty to improve the functioning of the justice delivery system thereby ensuring proper justice to the people.

He called upon all those practitioners to abide by the three pillars of human society - justice, equality and liberty in order to become a truthful, humane, perceptive and compassionate lawyer.

Chief Patron and Ex-Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mr. B M Lanong lauded the achievement of completing 100 years and called upon them to remind themselves of the rights and privileges of the people while discharging their duties. He also welcomed the directives of the Supreme Court and High Court which provides justice and protection to the people.

During the function the dignitaries lighted the centenary lamp which was followed by observance of 1 minute silence in memory of the erstwhile members. Earlier in the function the President of the Shillong Bar Association, Shillong Mr. C P Upadhayay while welcoming the gathering also highlighted on the background of the association and the immense contribution of the associated members.

Others who spoke on the occasion are Mr. K S Kynjing, Senior Member and Advocate General, Meghalaya, Justice T N K Singh, and Justice S R Sen.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY OBSERVED AT UMTYNGAR

Shillong, June 5, 2013: Alongwith the rest of the world, World Environment Day was observed today jointly by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills District and the Meghalaya Bharat Scout & Guides by organizing a simple function held at the Bharat Scout and Guides Training Centre, Umtyngar, about 22kms from Shillong. The theme for the World Environment Day is “Think.Eat.Save”.

Mr. R. V. Lyngdoh, MLA, Government Chief Whip graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the presence of Mr. C. Budnah, Additional, PCCF (Wildlife), Mr. C.P. Marak, CCF, Social Forestry and Environment, Smti A. Swer, State Secretary, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mr. P. Kharkongor, Sordar, Laitkroh, students and scouts and guides and people from all walk of life.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lyngdoh lauded the organizers or holding this programme to express concern for the degradation of the environment. Stressing the importance of the protection of environment by all stakeholders, Mr. Lyngdoh emphasize that the very survival of mankind depend on clean environment.

Mr. Lyngdoh called upon the students in particular and younger generation in general to take responsibility in creating awareness about the urgent need for the protection and preservation of clean and hygienic surroundings.

Others highlight of the day include power point presentation on the subject “Status of Environment of Meghalaya” by Mr. C.P. Marak, song and skit presented by the students and distribution of prizes and certificates to the winners and participants of slogan, drawing and painting competitions on the theme. Planting of tree saplings in an around the training centre by the chief guest, other dignitaries and students was also carried out later in the day.
