WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION

Together with the rest of the country, World Environment Day was observed in a befitting manner in Tura. To mark the occasion, the Education Department organized debate and quiz competitions for Secondary Schools at Tura Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, which was participated by 12 schools both from the urban and rural areas. The theme for the debate was “Environment Degradation is the price we are paying for development”. Besides debate and quiz, drawing and painting competitions were also organized for students in their respective schools.

Deputy Commissioner, Tura, Mr. E P Kharbhih, while speaking as the chief guest at the prize distribution function, dwelt upon the ancient wisdom of the forefathers and called upon the students to learn from them how to live in harmony with nature.

Assistant Conservator of Forests, West Garo Hills, Mr. P K Agrahari delivered the keynote address on the occasion, while the Inspector of Schools, Mr. P K Hajong presided over the function and the Headmaster, Don Bosco School, Tura, Fr. C Sangma proposed the vote of thanks.

Simultaneously, a free vehicular emission test was undertaken by the District Administration in collaboration with the Transport Department and Tura Police at different locations in Tura as part of the occasion. The vehicle emission test was conducted under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Transport, Mr. N R Marak along with the EAC Tura Mr. J P Lakiang, MVI, Tura, Mr. S D Shira and Enforcement Inspector, Mr. S K Marak.

At Nongstoin, the theme of the celebration was “Climate Change” alongwith a slogan “Kick the habit: towards a low carbon economy” whereby a series of programme have been organized to mark the occasion. The Meghalaya 4th Battalion in collaboration with Social Forestry Division, Nongstoin organized a tree plantation at Sohpian, in which around 300 saplings were planted in the Battalion campus.

The Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, Mr. F Kharlyngdoh graced the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of the Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills and Divisional Forest Officer (SF), Mr. S A Nongsiej. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Kharlyngdoh appealed to the people to grab the barren lands with plantation of trees for the benefit of the District and the State as a whole. He also hoped that with the people’s consciousness on the environment, the area will be able to bring back to its greenery and ecology. Various programmes were also organized by various educational institution of the District and Sub-Division at different places of the District which included planting of trees conducting of cleaning drive, drawing and painting competitions, poster, slogan and prize distribution.

At Mawkyrwat, the observation was held at the Community Hall, Mawkyrwat, where the SDO (C), Mawkyrwat, Mr. D Vijay Kumar graced the occasion as the chief guest. To mark the occasion, Environment Day March was conducted from C & R D Blck Campus via Mawkyrwat Market to the Community Hall. Tree plantation, essay writing, painting competition, extempore speech and cleaning drive was also organized to mark the day.

ADMISSION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH BENGAL

The University of North Bengal (NBU) announces admission for Post Graduate Diploma in Tea Management (2008-2009 Session) commencing from 1st August 2008.

The course is aimed to produce human resource skilled to perform as planters and adequately empowered to handle all the jobs in managing tea plantations.

Any graduate of any University recognized by the UGC is eligible to apply, those appearing in the final examination of 2008 may also apply. Preference will be given to candidates up to 25 years of age as on July 1, 2008.

Prospectus can be obtained from the University during working hours on payment of Rs. 100/- in cash from 14 June 2008. It can also be downloaded from the NBU website http://www.nbu.ac.in. The filled-in Application Form along with the requisite fee of Rs. 100/- in form of demand draft drawn in favour of University of North Bengal payable at State Bank of India, NBU Campus Branch should reach in an envelope super-scribed “Application for PG Diploma Course in Tea Management” to the Registrar, University of North Bengal, PO North Bengal University, Darjeeling, West Bengal, 734013 on or before 13th June, 2008.
