WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK, 2016 INAUGURATED

Meghalaya Minister for Forest and Environment, Shri P. Tynsong inaugurated the World Environment Week, 2016 organized by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, Shillong and Basin Development Unit, East Khasi Hills District on 6th June, 2016 at Moreau Institute of Integral Training, Shillong. The theme for the celebration is “Zero Tolerance for the Illegal Wildlife Trade” and the Sub Theme is “Save Wildlife, Save Meghalaya”. The programme for the World Environment Week includes slogan writing, painting competition, lecture and presentation on environment, extempore and essay competition for school and college student, awareness march and tree planting by villages, schools, colleges will be held across the District. In his inaugural address, Shri Tynsong emphasized on the urgent need in preserving Mother Nature for the very survival of mankind as signs of drastic changes in the climatic condition in different parts of the world serve as a warning bell to one and all. Stating that the Forest department is committed to preserve the rich biodiversity of the State, Shri Tynsong informed that more than 40 community reserved forests have been declared by the Forest department as reserved forests by working jointly with the local communities to counter the depleting forest cover in the state. Others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. S. Ashutosh, Additional PCCF and Additional, CEO, MBDA, Shri P. S. Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman BDU, East Khasi Hills. The programme was attended by officials from various line departments, head of institutional institutions and student. Later, to mark the occasion, the chief guest and other dignitaries also performed a ceremonial tree plantation in and around the premises. A similar programme was also held at South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat were Smti R. Lyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of Basin Development Unit of South West Khasi Hills, District inaugurated the Basin Environment Week at the Multipurpose Hall, Deputy Commissioner Office, Mawkyrwat.
