GRATUITOUS RELIEF

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District has sanctioned an amount of Rs.1,12,000 (Rupees one lakh twelve thousand) only for payment of gratuitous relief to affected beneficiaries under Amlarem C&RD Block.

SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN HELD

As part of the weeklong Eco-System Campaign “Completely Possible” which is being held from 5th June to 11th June, 2016 in West Garo Hills District, “Signature Campaign – Sign up for Clean and Green Garo Hills” was organized today at Tura Super Market complex. Deputy Commissioner,West Garo Hills, Tura Shri Pravin Bakshi graced the occasion as Chief Guest. It may be mentioned that the signature campaign is open for all citizens to write the message for the environment and the best slogans will be displayed on the walls of the town in order to create awareness to the people at large. In his speech, Shri Pravin Bakshi called upon the people to take care of the environment while stating that it is the responsibility of each and every individual to keep the town clean and green and protect and preserve the environment for our future generation. Further, he urged one and all to initiate rain water harvesting in the region and also suggested for planting more trees thereby improving the ecology and forest cover of the area. Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board, Sabrella Marak and President Tura Traders Union, Rev. I. Marak was amongst others who spoke on the occasion.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK

The District Administration, Williamnagar, IBDLP and DSEO, Williamnagar observed the World Environment Week under the theme ‘Go Wild for Life, Zero Tolerance for Illegal Wildlife Trade’ at Williamnagar Government College, Williamnagar on 8th June 2016. Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Deputy Commissioner, Williamnagar Shri. C. V. D. Diengdoh spoke on the importance of natural resources and the environment around them and make them aware on the need for their conservation for the survival of human race and animals that dwell on the forest. The Deputy Commissioner also said that Garo Hills is blessed by Mother Nature with rich biodiversity and fertile land that can grow anything with much effort and responsibility. Dwelling on the fact that Garo Hills can withstand the onslaught of man induced environmental degradation and it was time that the youth of the region to shoulder the responsibility of preserving the environment. While stressing on the participation by the youth, Shri Diengdoh said that preserving of trees can be start from schools and at home and urged the students of the society to set a commendable examples on preserving and conserving so that the next generation can emulate and pass on to others. Smt. R. D. Sangma, Divisional Forest Officer, Williamnagar and Smt. Diana Sangma, EAC, Williamnagar also spoke on the occasion Over 200 school and college students, teachers, principals attended the programme. As part of the programme essay and debate competition was also held for the students.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK CELEBRATION CONCLUDES

With a view to create awareness among the students and residents of Mairang about the environmental degradation and needs of ecological balance, the Office of the Block Development Officer, Mairang C&RD Block, organised the World Environment Week under the theme “Go Wild for Life”. The 3 day programme which was inaugurated on the 6th of June 2016 concluded on 8th June 2016. The programme included quiz competition, debate completion, slogan writing, painting competition, lecture and presentation on environment and extempore speech for school and college students. On the day an awareness march was carried out from Tirot Sing Memorial College to Tirot Sing Ecological & Heritage Park. The programme was attended by Shri Metbah Lyngdoh, local MLA, officials from various departments, head of institutions and students from over 15 schools. Other highlights of the day include skit presentation by Seng Biria Dei Por and songs by Lam Jingshai SHG and Na la Tynrai. Certificates and Prizes were also distributed to the winners of various competitions held during the 3 day programme. Later, to mark the occasion, tree plantation in and around the Tirot Sing Ecological & Heritage Park was also carried out.

K.J.P. GIRLS HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES QUASQUICENTENNIAL JUBILEE

The Quasquicentennial Jubilee Celebration themed ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’ of K.J.P. Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Shillong, was inaugurated here today at the school premises by Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma who graced the celebration as the Chief Guest while Home Minister, Roshan Warjri attended the function as the Guest of Honor. Speaking to a gathering of students, past students, retired teachers and headmistresses and parents, Dr Mukul Sangma expressed happiness to be a part of the celebrations of a premier institution in the state that is exclusively dedicated to the girl child to equip them with knowledge and enlightenment. He said that such milestones in life give us an opportunity to look back and acknowledge the blessings of Almighty that through the missionaries the light of knowledge was brought into the state. The Chief Minister also said that in a matrilineal society distinctive to the state of Meghalaya it is only befitting to have such a school to empower women. He stated that though the state is confronted with a lot of challenges and constraints it is the endeavor of the government to meet the expectations and aspirations of the younger generation. He also stressed that there is a need for schools and colleges to look at how the positive energy of the youth can be directed and diversified which can provide them sustainable livelihood. He urged the teachers to give the students the necessary handholding to enable them to make the right career choices. He also added that the human development programmes funded by Asian Development Bank will not only upgrade infrastructures but also upscale and reinforce the skills of teachers. Guest of Honor, Minister, Home, Roshan Warjri in her address said that the school is set up on strong principles of love, peace and brotherhood and the scriptures. She said that the school has been instrumental in the making and evolving of the community through the education of womenfolk, adding that though the challenges in the modern world are complex and intricate the sound principles of the school can be emulated to make a difference. The K.J.P. Girls’ Higher Secondary School was established in 1892 by the Welsh Missionary Society with the lone purpose of educating the girl child. The school has produced many distinguished women personalities and the school is shouldered by the K.J.P. Synod as the sponsoring body. The school also has a morning section from classes VI-X and Higher Secondary section in Arts and Commerce. The students of the school presented colorful folk dances and melodious songs of the Khasis, Jaintias and the Garos. Earlier, Rev (Dr) H Rymbai led the gathering in prayer while H Mawroh, Principal of the school delivered the welcome address. Among others present were, D D Lapang, Chief Advisor to the Government of Meghalaya, R V Lyngdoh, Government Chief Whip and officials from the education department.
