WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY CELEBRATION

The first ever “World Food Safety Day”, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20th December 2018 was celebrated today by the Office of the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya under the theme “Food Safety, Everyone’s Business” at Conference Hall, National Health Mission, Health Complex, Laitumkhrah, Shillong. Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Dr. A. Warr, Director of Health Service (MI), Meghalaya said that the Food Safety Day was celebrated to create awareness and inspire action about the important of food safety in our life. “Unsafe food is a threat to human life” stated Dr. Warr and he also stressed on the need to strengthen the food testing unit in the State to ensure that the food consumed is safe and will not cause damages to health.

Shri S. N. Sangma, Joint Commissioner of Food Safety in his presentation highlighted the five pillars under the theme “Food Safety, Everyone’s Business”, i.e. maintain personal hygiene while handling food, keep cooking and surrounding area clean, follow keys to safer food, check food for adulteration and spoilage before consuming and read food labels to know what you are eating. Earlier the chief guest administered the World Food Safety Pledge to all the participants to promote safe food, and to prevent, detect, and manage food-borne risks. The programme was also attended by Dr. R. E. Donn, DHS (R), Shri S. N. Sangma, Joint Commissioner of Food Safety, Smti D. B. S. Mukhim, Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, East Khasi Hills, officials from the health department among others.
