Press Release No. 261/12 CM INAUGURATES NORTH GARO HILLS DISTRICT Shillong, July 27, 2012: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma today inaugurated North Garo Hills District, fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of the people of Resubelpara and the adjoining region after a decade and a half of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s assurance of upgrading Resubelpara into a district. The need for the upgradation of Resubelpara Civil Sub Division into a full fledged district was set in motion a decade and a half back during the year 1995 under the banner of North Garo Hills District Demand Committee led by its president Willingbirth R Marak. Since then the endeavor of the committee to achieve its aims and aspirations gained momentum and eventually under the able leadership of Dr Sangma their dream had been realized. Congratulating the people of North Garo Hills, Dr Sangma stressed on the need to create an advantageous atmosphere for sustainable growth in the region. He said that the people of North Garo Hills needed to create a conducive environment to enable officers posted in the region to work unhindered. “When we work together to achieve an objective through peaceful ways we can attain it” Dr Sangma said and added that an undemocratic approach to any purpose was detrimental to progress. Stating that land acquisition was necessary for the development of infrastructure in the newly inaugurated district, Dr Sangma urged the people of the region to generously offer land for the purpose. Lamenting the unsatisfactory results of the last SSLC results in Garo Hills, Dr Sangma urged the parents to create an enabling environment for the youth of the region to compete with the others outside the region. He informed that residential schools were going to be established in every block of the state to facilitate academic excellence. He further informed that several colleges were going to be provincialised very soon and that one of them would be in North Garo Hills. Among others who addressed the gathering were Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Rowell Lyngdoh, Home Minster H D R Lyngdoh, Education Minister, Dr R C Laloo, IPR Minister, A T Mondol, Urban Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh and C&RD Minister, Saleng A Sangma. Principal Secretary, Home, K S Kroppa read out the government notification proclaiming the creation of North Garo Hills District and handed over the notification to North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner W Khyllep in the presence of North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Aditya Goenka. |
