Press Release No. 239/12 CM TO BOOST CROSS BORDER TRADE IN MEGHALAYA Shillong, 4th July, 2012: Following the success of the cross border trade between Meghalaya and Bangladesh, the state is looking forward for expanding their trade potentials with Myanmar as well. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister to the Government of Meghalaya stated, “The growth in trade with Bangladesh and Myanmar is set to be a game changer for the economy of the region.” Stressing on the need to attract investment and strengthening trade ties, he said “Foreign direct investment in retail is a good thing for the country and opposition to it for the sake of it was not good.” He further clarified that his efforts to seek a new law for the safety and interest of the students’ community as a whole were misinterpreted and restricted to a regional perspective. “I am in touch with the Human Resources Ministry for the enactment of a law to regulate functioning of private universities for the benefit of the students’ across the country,” he said. He also highlighted, ‘tourism’ to be one of the key potential area for economic growth in the Northeast. “All the North- Eastern states need to market the region as one tourist destination. Tourism needs to go beyond state boundaries.” He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for sanctioning many of the state’s projects which were in the pipeline for years, he said, “Our plan size would increase by 44 percent, which will be the highest for any state.” |
