Press Release No. 310/10 SENSITISATION SEMINAR ON GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS HELD IN SHILLONG July 8th, Shillong: With the initiative of the Ministry of DoNER, the office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trade Marks, Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya a Sensitisation Seminar on Geographical Indications was organized at the Auditorium Hall at the Main secretariat Building today the 9th July, 2010. Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya graced the occasion as Chief Guest and other dignitaries include Mr. P. H. Kurian, IAS, Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, Government of India, Mumbai, Mr. G. L. Verma, Deputy Registrar of Trade Marks & GIs, Mumbai, Mr. W. M. S. Pariat, IAS, Chief Secretary, Meghalaya, Mr. Barkos Warjri, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Meghalaya, various representatives from different departments, officers and others. The Seminar highlighted topics on the introduction on Geographical Indications (GI) GIs Registry procedure, and many more and deliberations were also made. This event is the first of its kind in the State and it aims at creating awareness. Speaking in the occasion, Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister, Meghalaya stated that the state has many resouses like herbs that can be used in medicines, flowers, turmeric, and others that can boost agricultural and economic growth. The state has some products like Lakadong, Turmeric, Khasi Mandarin, Orange and variety of cane and bamboos, reeds, unique fruits like Sohphie, Sohiong, Sohmon and many more that could find place in the new register as Geographical Identifications products. |
