Press Release No. 622/06 MEGHALAYA CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY Along with the rest of the country, the 60th Independence Day of India was celebrated with fun and gaiety, amidst a large crowd turn out in all the districts, civil sub-divisions and administrative units of Meghalaya. In the state capital, Shillong, the celebrations began with the hoisting of the tricolor in all government offices and institutions. The official ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex, Polo Ground where the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Mr. J. D. Rymbai unfurled the national flag and took the salute of the marching contingents which comprises of Assam Regiment, BSF, CRPF, MLP Bn, District Executive Force, Border Wing Bn Home Guards, NCC Boys & Girls, Sacred Heard Boys & Girls, Scouts (H. L. Mizo), Guides (Stephen Memorial & Laban Presbyterian Higher Secondary School), Laitumkrah Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Loreto Convent, Laban Bengalee Boys Higher Secondary School, Laban Presbyterian Higher Secondary School and Kiddies Corner School, Laitumkrah. In his ceremonial address, Mr. Rymbai recalled the sacrifices made by the great men and women of India led by Mahatma Gandhi who fought to achieve independence from foreign rule. He also recalled the sacrifices made by the patriots of the State - U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nongbah and Pa Togan Sangma. He informed that India has been growing in strength over the last 59 years and today the country is recognized as a major world power owing the achievement to the strength of the democratic institutions, the valiant armed forces, academics, scientists and researchers, the youth of India and the enterprising people of this country, he added. Underlining that peace and stability are the pre requisites to achieve a standard level of economic growth and prosperity, he urged upon the misguided youth to shun the path of violence and to come for negotiation with the Government and work together to make Meghalaya an island of peace. Informing that Meghalaya was among the first States to implement the Right to Information Act, 2005, he expressed his hope that it will be used extensively by the people to promote public interest. Mr. Rymbai said that in the Agriculture sector, continued efforts will be made to increase production by using of high yielding variety seeds and improved practices. Government will also explore the state’s potential in organic farming. Highest priority will be given to horticulture and food processing enterprises for generating employment in the rural areas. Animal Husbandry, fishery and bee keeping are other important activities for rural income generation. “Thousand Pond Scheme” has been started by the Government to develop fishery, similar programmes for other sectors of rural economy will be introduced, he assured. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act under which each rural household is guaranteed 100 days of employment in a year has been implemented in Meghalaya under which districts of South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills will be covered and the Central Government has been requested to extend the coverage of this scheme to other Districts of the State. The West Garo Hills district has been selected for implementation of Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana (RSVY) in the State as a Pilot Scheme aimed at creation of critical infrastructure which is now under implementation. |

At Tura, West Garo Hills District, the 60th Independence Day celebration was held at Chandmary Playground. Meghalaya Home Minister Mr. R. G. Lyngdoh unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya salute before an impressive parade of 36 marching contingents led by Parade Commander, DSP. B. D. Marak. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Mr Lyngdoh stressed on the importance of coordination between the society and different government departments in developing “bottom up” approach for the development of the region. He also called upon NGOs to play more vigilance role by effectively utilizing the Right to Information Act to ensure success of all government programmes of various sector. Later, the Home Minister, C&RD Minister other dignitaries gave away the prizes to the meritorious students of the district, certificates of appreciation to the government servants for the outstanding contribution while discharging their dutuies and the trophies for the best marching contingent. The highlight of the cultural items presented on the occasion was the Bhangra dance, Rang de Basanti performed by the students of the Tura Public school. Various games and sports for children, open tug of war for women and an exhibition football played by DCs XI and Doctrors XI were organized as part of the occasion. At Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya Minister, Forest and Environment etc., Mr. M. N. Mukhim hoisted the Tricolor and took the salute of the marching contingent from school students at St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School playground, Pyndengrei. At Jowai, Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya Minister, Sports and Youth Affairs etc., Mr. P. Lyngdoh unfurled the Tricolor and took the salute of the marching contingent of the State Police, Home Guards and school students from different part of Jowai town at Jrisalein playground, Jowai. |

Press Release No. 625/06 COACHING FOR CIVIL SERVICES MAIN EXAMINATION 2006 The Director, All India Services Pre-Examination Training Centre, Addl. Secretariat Building (MATI) Premises, Shillong has informed that applications are invited for Coaching Course for Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Main Examination 2006 from Candidates Male and Female belonging to SC/ST/ OBC and other Minority Communities of North Eastern Region and of Bihar, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh and declared by the Union Public Service Commission as having qualified at the Civil Services Preliminary (Qualifying) Examination, 2006 for the UPSC Civil Services Main(Written) Examination, 2006. The Coaching will be imparted in Arts and Science Subjects excluding Indian Languages, through the English medium. The cost of coaching expenses will be borne by the Centre. No hostel facilities are available, but the Outstation Trainee Candidates admitted into the Coaching Course will be eligible for a Stipend of Rs. 700/- (Rupees Seven hundred) only per month. Local Trainees will be entitled to a monthly Stipend of Rs. 225/- (Rupees Two hundred) only per month. The last date of receipt of the application will be within 14 days from the date of publication of the results of the Civil Services Preliminary (Qualifying) Examination, 2006 by the Union Public Services Commission. Press Release No. 626/06 RURAL EMPLOYMENT SCHEME LAUNCHED IN WEST GARO HILLS The Meghalaya Minister for C & RD, etc., Ms Irene Lyngdoh formally launched the Meghalaya Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, (NREGA) 2005 for the District of West Garo Hills and job cards were also distributed on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15, 2006 at Rongram Block headquarters at Asananggre. The scheme envisages that the rural households request for registration of adult members of the family for guaranteed wage employment, if they volunteer to do unskilled manual work. All such registered households will be entitled for 100 days of wage employment in a year and paid minimum wages according to approved rates, which will be equal for both male and female workers. Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Ms. Lyngdoh, expressed hope that the launching of this scheme would usher in an era of reform in the rural sector through generation of rural employment and creation of rural assets. She further assured that the C & R D Department would give the implementation of this scheme the highest priority at all levels. She then requested the Deputy Commissioner and the BDOs to create more awareness on the scheme to the rural masses and appealed to the general public for their support and cooperation for the successful implementation of the scheme. Home Minister, Mr. R G Lyngdoh who was also present on the occasion, lauded the District Administration for being able to go ahead with the implementation of the scheme so successfully and hope that it would be used in the way it is meant to be done. Press Release No. 627/06 LOK ADALAT HELD AT NONGPOH With a view to ease and facilitate the people to an easy legal process of disposing of their long pending cases in the court, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh has organized the Lok Adalat at Ri Bhoi College on August 12, 2006. The Lok Adalat was sponsored by the Meghalaya State Legal Service Authority (MSLSA), Shillong. The Lok Adalat was attended by the Additonal Advocate General, Meghalaya, Mr. W H D Syngkon, Ms. M R Mawlong, Mr. B E Wahlang, Members of MSLSA and Mr. R Rapthap, ADM. The function was presided over by Mr. B Dhar, Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh. It may be mentioned that 31 cases were settled out of which 11 were motor accident cases. |
