Press Release No. 350/09 PRESS RELEASE Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr D D Lapang today attended a Conference of Chief Ministers on Internal Security at New Delhi which was presided over by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. Union Home Minister, Mr P Chidambaram also attended the conference. All Chief Ministers, Governors, Chief Secretaries and DGPs were also present. During the conference, Dr Lapang mentioned about the need for creation of two battalions for Meghalaya for checking the influx on the International Border and on the Inter-State. Dr Lapang interalia also urged the Centre for providing funds for Police modernisation in the State. He also stressed on the need for a Special Commando Battalion in the State. The State also need a Counter Insurgency Warfare Institution to train up the police personnel. The Chief Minister pleaded that since Meghalaya is virtually an island of peace in the North East, it should be considered for a “Peace Dividend Package” with additional funds for development. |
