Press Release No. 368/09 PRESS RELEASE Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India held a meeting with the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. D D Lapang, at the Meghalaya House on Wednesday. The Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala, the Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul Sangma and the state Chief Secretary, Ranjan Chatterjee, also attended the meeting along with the Chief Minister. Nilekani explained the concept and procedure for issuing the unique identification numbers to the citizens of India. Dr. Lapang was the first Chief Minister from the country to have held such a meeting with the Nilekani. The Chief Minister requested Nilkani to start the process of allotting unique identification numbers from Meghalaya since the state shared a large international border with Bangladesh and is facing problems of infiltration. The Chief Minister also extended all cooperation to the UIA and assured cooperation from all Congress ruled states in the North east for the same. However, Nilkani informed the Chief Minister that it will take atleast 18 months for the project to roll out. |
