ONE DAY STATE CONFERENCE ON STRENGTHENING THE FINANCES AND FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY OF ADCS

The Meghalaya Institute of Governance, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the Department of Economics, North Eastern Hill University today jointly organised a One Day State Conference on the topic Strengthening the Finances and Financial Accountability of Autonomous District Councils in Meghalaya at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. This is the first of its kind initiative to bring together representatives of Autonomous District Councils and state government along with resource persons to deliberate on the challenges of local government financing.

Shri Lahkmen Rymbui, Minister for District Council Affairs attended the programme as Chief Guest and Shri Titosstarwell Chyne, Chief Executive Member, KHADC as the Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Lahkmen Rymbui highlighted on the importance of accounting in this new age and stated that it is vital for all the Autonomous District Council in the state to be highly dynamic in accounting without missing the proper mechanism with the changing policy and financial rules of the government. In this era of technology, new methods of accounting are being streamlined into the system in which the accounting wing of the respective ADC needs to update and upscale themselves to improve the accounting and auditing framework of the Councils, he added.

The objectives of the programme is to orient the representatives of the three ADCs, state government officials and representatives of local bodies of the state on measures undertaken by Rural Bodies in the country to strengthen their finances as well as reforms in the accounting and auditing process and to also discuss the financial health and challenges of the ADCs and measures which are needed to improve the financial transparency and accountability of the Councils.

The resource persons in this conference includes Prof. V. N Alok, IIPA New Delhi, Prof Sumarlin Umdor, Department of Economics, NEHU and Shri Tornado G. Wanniang, Sr. Audit Officer & Core Faculty, Regional Training Institute, IA and AD, Shillong.

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY OBSERVED IN TURA

As part of the celebration of National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dyan Chand, Hockey legend, the National Youth Day is celebrated here in New Tura Playground today.

Indigenous games such as Wa pong Sika, Rongma Chilsusa a and Tug of War were conducted for school students during the programme by the District Sports Office, Tura.

In her brief speech, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills Rezia Ch Sangma expressed her gratitude to the District Sports Office, Tura for organising this programme and also mentioned that this day is especially to honour sports persons, coaches, etc for their achievements in various sporting disciplines and bringing laurels for our district and State as a whole.Various schools of the town participated in the event and prizes were also distributed by the Chief Guest during the programme.

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY CELEBRATED AT AMPATI

Inter School Tug of War and other indigenous games marked the celebration of National Sports Day organized by District Sports Office at Ampati Students Field, Ampati on Monday. National Sports Day or Rashtriya Khel Divas is observed every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey wizard of India and celebrate his legacy as well as to create awareness on the importance of incorporating sports and games in our day to day lives.

Eight schools from across the district participated in the events organized to mark the day. InTug of War girls category, Birin Nuchong Secondary School bagged the first position, followed by Garobadha Higher Secondary School and Mothers Union School, Ampati respectively. In Tug of War, boys category, Birin Nuchong Secondary School, Ampati and Garobadha Higher Secondary School took the first and second places, respectively, while Emmanuel English School, Betasing came third.

In Wa pong Sika event for boys, Dewill A.Marak and Ansengbalgrik D. Sangma both from Birin Nuchong School, Ampati won the first and second prizes, respectively and Togam Ch. Marak of Mothers Union School got the third prize. In Rong ma Chilsusaa event for girls, Simnitbal B. Marak of Emmanuel English School bagged the first prize, while Balsime Marak of Garobadha H.S. School and Sildime D. Sangma of Birin Nuchong School bagged the second and third prizes, respectively. Birin Nuchong School, Ampati was declared the overall champions of the day, Emmanuel English School, Betasing became the runners-up team.

Additional DC, South West Garo Hills, P.K.Sangma attended the celebration as the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners. In her address, she underlined the most important qualities that one must have as a sportsperson which include maintaining a disciplined life, perseverance, spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. She also paid tributes to the Indian sportspersons who bagged 61 medals in the Commonwealth Games, 2022 in Birmingham.Earlier, the District Sports Officer, Saljagring Marak in his welcome address gave a brief introduction about the celebration of National Sports Day.

CYCLIST ROJIT SINGH YANGLEM ENTHRALLS SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SHILLONG AT MEET THE CHAMPION PROGRAMME

Cyclist Rojit Singh Yanglem today interacted with the youths of Shillong on the benefits of a balanced diet and maintaining a disciplined life in the Meghalaya edition of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Meet the Champion event to mark National Sports Day.

The track cyclist interacted with more than 200 students at St. Anthonys Higher Secondary School. He expressed delight in participating in the session. The athlete explained the importance of sports and a healthy lifestyle in a student life and stressed on the importance of having a well balanced diet. Yanglem shared his story and gave an insight on his training and highlighted the role hard work and dedication in excelling in sports.

Students at St. Anthonys came up with interesting questions on sports, fitness and nutrtion among others, which were satisfactorily answered by the ace cyclist. The Principal of St. Anthonys Higher Secondary School Rev Fr Anthony Kharkongor expressed gratitude towards the Government of Meghalaya and Government of India for selecting their school for Meet the Champion programme.

He praised the initiative of the Government and exclaimed that these motivating interactions will not only bring a positive change in schoolchildren but also will inspire them to follow the paths of these great athletes, the heroes who have brought laurels to the nation.

As part of Meet the Champion, Yanglem also played basketball with the students. He lauded Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi for taking the initiative to celebrate this important day. He also said that he is trying very hard to improve his performance adding that his future plan is to represent India in the 2024 Olympics. The track cyclist who was part of the team event of the recent Commonwealth Games held at Birmingham had finished in sixth place.

PM unique school visit campaign, Meet the Champion aims to prepare and connect the young school students with the champions. The aim is to acknowledge and ready them with champion qualities to face the world in any sphere of life. The campaign was kicked off by Olympic Gold Medalist Neeraj Chopra in December 2021. It has reached various parts of the country over the past few months. Many prominent athletes visited schools and interacted with the students in 26 locations across the country to celebrate National Sports Day.

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY CELEBRATED IN EAST JAINTIA HILLS DISTRICT

As part of the celebration of the National Sports Day 2022, the Office of the District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat in collaboration District Sports Promotion Society, East Jaintia Hills District today organized a Tug of War and Mawpoin competition at Dkhiah West Playground, East Jaintia Hills District.

Six schools of the district were invited to participate in the two events that were conducted for both the boys and girls. The competition was based on a team based point system. In the Mawpoin and Tug of War Competition Girls, Dkhiah Presbyterian Secondary School bagged the first place while Ambrose Memorial Secondary School and Ieng Swer Memorial Secondary School bagged the second and third place respectively. In the Mawpoin and Tug of War Competition Boys, the first place was bagged by Ambrose Memorial Secondary School, the second place was bagged by Ieng Swer Memorial Secondary School and Dkhiah Presbyterian Secondary School bagged the third place
