Mawkyrwat Civil Sub Division which falls under the Maharam Syiemship was created on 26.6.1982. It may be mentioned that South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat has an area of 1341sq km with a population of 98583 (2011 census) and includes 2 Assembly Constituency which are 35-Ranikor Assembly Constituency and 36-Mawkyrwat Assembly Constituency also 2 C&RD blocks – Ranikor and Mawkyrwat under which there are 216 villages connected by a total road length of 475.76Kms. The literacy rate of the District is 76.84 percent. The District also shares certain parts of the Indo Bangladesh Border with the major trade routes at Borsora, Cheragoan and Bagli. The main minerals available in the District are Coal, Limestone, Uranium and Granite. Among various tourist spots located in the district, Jakrem Hotsprings and Ranikor, also known as the Anglers’ paradise, are the most famous. Speaking at the inauguration of the South West Khasi Hills District at Mawkyrwat, Meghalaya chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma called for active participation of the people of the newly inaugurated district in the developmental schemes initiated by the government of Meghalaya. “Promise us that in the next Olympics, the Indian contingent will have people from Mawkyrwat in it and I will promise you that you will have a sports complex this year itself. Promise me that you will produce the best students and I will promise you that your college here will be provincialized. Promise me that you will work hard and I will promise you the best of roads. Let us start this partnership with outmost commitment,” said Dr. Sangma in this regard. Dr Mukul said that it is long overdue that the Government should create more Districts to bring administration closer to the people. “This Government on the first day when it assume office had promised to bring overall development in the State and to address the issues of poverty and also to provide quality Education and Health facilities in the State”, he said while justifying that the need for the creation of 4 districts is to ensure that the plans and programmes of the Government reaches the people and monitoring of the implementation process is effectively done at the ground level. Stating that launching programmes and implementing them are two totally different things, Dr. Sangma said that if effective monitoring is not present, it is difficult for a scheme to produce results. It is with this in mind that the previous districts of the state have been reduced in size thereby giving birth to the four new districts of the state which will facilitate better monitoring of the schemes initiated by the government. Dr. Sangma opined that the monitoring of these schemes earlier under the larger districts of the state must have been very difficult for the officers especially in the remote areas of the state. Likening the new South West Khasi Hills district to a new – born baby, Dr. Sangma said that it needs care and nurturing and called upon the people of the district to provide this. He said that with the active participation of the people, South West Khasi Hills has the potential to become a model district. He appealed to the parents and the academicians to give all that they can to the students of the district so that in time, all the officers of the district will be from the area itself. He urged upon the parents and teachers alike to make a commitment to make this happen. Dr. Sangma also said that Meghalaya will soon have a railway line from Mendipathar to Assam and added that this will generate a lot of revenue for the state. Besides providing better connectivity, the new railway line will bring down the cost of most things and also provide additional means of income to the people. He said that as of now, all business being created here in Meghalaya is creating business opportunities in Assam which is an issue which needs to be addressed. Taking not of the NGOs and their adverse stance with regard to railway lines as it is apprehended that this will result in influx, Dr. Sangma said that this particular problem can not be solved by the government alone, it needs the active participation of the people. Urging the people to create an enabling environment for the government to work towards their betterment, Dr. Sangma pleaded with the people not to resort to bandhs and agitations as these are just paid holidays for government employees. “They get paid to sit at home with your money, how is this productive?” questioned the chief minister. Rather than resorting to agitations, the chief minister said that people should change their mindset and focus on positive energy. With a request that the people resolve to make the district unique and something special, Dr. Sangma said, “Make us feel like learning from you. I assure you that as we leave this place, we are leaving behind a part of the government which will work for you. Your responsibility is to work with the departments which are going to come up here.” |
