SHILLONG COLLEGE GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION INAUGURATED

The Golden Jubilee Celebration of Shillong College was inaugurated on August 17, 2005 at the college premises .The Chief Guest on the occasion was Meghalaya Governor, Mr. M. M. Jacob.

In his inaugural speech, Mr. Jacob said that the occasion was a landmark in the history of the institution which has come a long way since it was first established in 1955 and the celebration is a tribute to the founders and the patrons as well as the management of the college that the college, from its humble beginning could be developed to its present stature. He added that during the period the college has achieved commendable progress and has served the cause of Higher Education for the students in a good way with the number of students and faculty members having increased.

Saying that in today’s world of expanding knowledge and information, Mr.Jacob said that disciplines too have diversified with new assumptions and theories which have cumulatively helped in endowing knowledge society in the world. He further added that agencies like UGC, state government as well as experts in the field have to work in close concert so that real progress is achieved not only in the field of education but in other spheres of economic and social objectives.

Mr. Jacob said that the status of education in India needs a face lift with well planned programmes and better infrastructure with improved human resources. He also expressed concern over the increasing ratio of drop outs in the state besides the need of well trained teachers. He also felt the need of capacity building programmes for students who have completed college education so that they could face the real world and he also emphasised for moral leadership in education. Rural empowerment is also a challenge which the education system needs to accept and address, he added.
