CANE AND BAMBOO CRAFTS TRAINING PROGRAM LAUNCHED AT BAKSAPARA

Cane and Bamboo Crafts Training Program under Skills Meghalaya Project was inaugurated on Thursday at Multi Facility Centre of Baksapara village, located at Indo Bangladesh border of South West Garo Hills. The Meghalaya State Skills Development Society , under Labour Department, Government of Meghalaya, will provide 28 days of non residential training to 120 individuals of Hathinara and Baksapara villages in separate batches under this program, which is an initiative of the Government of Meghalaya, aimed to provide livelihood and income generation opportunities to the trainees.

The target groups being Self Help Groups, Producer Groups, unemployed youths and differently abled people, MSSDS empanelled Wadak Boldak Handicrafts Group to not only provide training to these groups but also provide hand holding support, thereby providing necessary assistance such as opening of bank accounts, creating marketing linkages and introducing them to already existing government schemes among many others.

Stressing on delivering quality crafts with consistency, Armand Momin, EAC of South West Garo Hills, who attended the inaugural program as the Chief Guest, urged the trainees to maintain discipline during the learning process and use these skills to upgrade their livelihood.

General Manager of DCIC, DFR Marak who attended the program as one of the guests, informed that their Department promotes such craftsmanship and have been supplying the crafts prepared by such trainees to Handicraft Emporiums at Metro cities.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HELD AT BHOIRYMBONG

The Meghalaya State Commission for Women in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Office, Ri Bhoi District and One Stop Centre, Nongpoh organized a one day awareness programme on Domestic Violence at the premises of Bhoirymbong Ayush Hospital today the 18th in the midst presence of Smti L.Sangma, Member Secretary MSCW, Smt. E.Kharshandy DSWO, Smt. F.Majaw Member MSCW, Smt. A.I Sohtun Co ordinator MSCW and others. The programme were also participated by the Anganwadi workers, ASHAs and women from different localities.

Smti. F.Majaw in her keynote address highlighted on the functions and role of the women commission and its constructive efforts rendered for the safety of women. She said that the main purpose of the awareness programme is to familiarize the participants about certain issues related with domestic violence and its outcome. Domestic violence is the deep rooted issue that affects the family members, relatives and the society. Hence, through this awareness, it would enable to make women understand and help them bring out issues to the forefront for dialogue without fears. It is also the need of the hour to educate community members about the prevalence of abuse and to encourage people to take action to promote social change.

The Resource Persons of the day includes Smti. Annie I.Sohtun who spoke on Domestic violence, its nature & causes relating it to gender and power relations. Smt. M.Rapsang Advocate delivered her speech on the Protection of Women from domestic violence Act 2005 with special focus on the role of the protection officer. Whereas Dr. T.Sutnga lectures on the topic Health implications of domestic violence on women especially pregnant women and Smt. M.Marbaniang SI from Police department spoke on Criminal Law on domestic violence. the resource persons in their speech said that domestic violence is a silent epidemic that had affected to many family households and the main cause of it was due to alcoholism, drug addict, unplanned family, teenage marriage, school dropout etc therefore, in order to combat this, those woman who had faces this abuse shall come to the forefront and approach the concerned authority for redressal the same so as to avoid and protect themselves from any further mental and psychological agony or any other untoward incident.

INTENSIFIED DIARRHOEA CONTROL FORTNIGHT 2022 LAUNCHED

The Office of the District Health Society, National Health Mission, East Khasi Hills District today launched the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight 2022 at the Community Hall, Jongksha Village. Smt R. M. Kurbah, Secretary Health and Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya attended the programme as the Chief Guest.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Secretary Health and Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, Smt. R.M. Kurbah stated that the aim of the programme is to bring down the mortality rate of children from diarrhea and stressed on the importance of clean drinking water.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. E. G. Tariang Pajat, Addl. DMHO, East Khasi Hills District said that the objective of the fortnight is to intensify the prevention and control of diarrhoea especially among children, to create awareness about the usage of ORS and Zinc during diarrhoea in children between age group of one to five, to instruct heath workers in educating the community with regards to prevention and treatment. She also stressed on the importance of cleanliness.

During the programme, ASHA workers under Jongksha PHC performed a skit to create awareness on prevention of diarrhea. A demonstration on hand washing and usage of ORS was also presented.
